This is a major problem
It drives me nuts. I start up the tool, and try to manage an animation set whose model is missing, and it immediately crashes. I try it again, but crashes every time. Any advice?

What do you mean "try to manage an animation set whose model is missing"?

For example, I have an animation set of Rainbow Dash imported and animated in the editor. Later, I deleted the pack that the model came from and re-extracted the pack's zip file for refreshing. So now, the animation set's directory isn't found, the model is replaced by a big red ERROR sign. I try to replace it with the new Rainbow Dash, But the software just crashes on me.

Oh man, this is bad. After startup, one single move I make, and it crashes. I'll never be able to work on anything. D:

How are you trying to replace it? The only viable method would be to import the new one as a fresh animation set and copying the previous one's animation samples over to the new one. Simply changing the MDL name in the element viewer can mess everything up.

Oh, yeah, i know how to do that. That's not my problem. My problem is, it crashes after the first move I make.

SFM is kind of touchy when it comes to having a model in the animation set editor that disappears from your game folders, especially if you're trying to replace it with a model that has the same name, its very confusing! Here's what I would recommend; export the animation of the model then delete it from the animation set editor. Save your project file and then restart SFM. Now load the new model and import the animation you just exported.

Technically, if it's the same model name, in the exact same folder, it SHOULDN'T be an issue. i had the V3 pack before and at one point had deleted the entire pack and reinstalled it with an updated version (the first pack had the broken eye issue. they released an updated one with fixed eyes). in a save file i had been working with at the time sfm replaced the old models with error symbols when i deleted the pack, then replaced the errors with the new model when i reinstalled it.

Thanks for your help, guys. I'll remember this as soon as I figure out a way to get SFM to cooperate.

If it's about the crashing problem, I think I figured it out. Just make sure the playhead isn't in the shot where the "error" is. You can still select it and manage the Animation sets, and it'll be just fine.
