Day/night
Is there a quick, easy way to make a map look like nighttime (rather than getting a dark version of the map)? I find that using toneMapScale and colour correction filters causes my movie to become too dark when I export it (much darker than what it looks like in SFM).

Other than toneMapScale and messing with lights, not really.

To do it propely, I believe you have to program a custom shader for the skybox.

There's actually a few maps in the L4D2 workshop that do something like this.

Ok, thanks for the replies.

So if I wanted to have a scene inside a house at night, I would have to turn down the toneMapScale for the entire scene, and then manually add a light inside the house?

I've done this in the past. Lower the tonemapscale a lot (but not completely) and light the exterior scene with a big, dark blue light. Then light the interiors as you will.

The first shot in this video of mine is a competent enough example, but I forgot to disable the map's fog for the final render so the sky looks weird.

^ If you're going to do that be sure to have a little bit of volumetrics on. There are sliders to adjust volumetric intensity.

That looks great. How exactly do you light the exterior scenes with a big dark blue light? And where does the light need to be put?

^ It's not hard, just required a bit of experience with the light settings. You'll get it eventually if you mess with lights for long enough.

I tried out the light method, but as you can see, it looks a bit dodgy:

I'm not too sure what I'm doing wrong. Not to mention, the lights make moving the camera around laggy as heck.

I stumbled across this method of changing the skybox and lowering toneMapScale, and I'm curious if anyone else uses this method:

You can use Black void for the shots you need. or look and see if Sync made a dark map of it.

Or change the skbox to something like sky_nightfall_01 like you did

I've use skyboxes before and it works great. I don't know aobut toneMapScale.

toneMapScale works relatively well. As long as you don't look up into the sky and see a Pluto sun.
