Report a translation problem
I am having a similar problem as above. I've verifed the files of not only synergy, but of HL2, e1, and e2. I even tried reinstalling synergy. But the problem still persists.
I'd also add that in my case, when I start synergy, the green synergy background freezes before the menu options shows up. I can go to task manager but I have no ability to select a program or close it. I end up having to restart my PC every time I try to run Synergy.
Any help is appreciated -- thanks!
Have you run hl2 (and episodes) at least to the main menu? This is needed for them to properly initialize the files after being installed.
Thanks for getting back to me. I've since run hl2 and the episodes to the menu, but I'm still getting the same problem, unfortunately :(
You say you're having a 'similar' problem, can you be specific about what you're experiencing?
When I start synergy, the synergy background screen comes up like it usually does but freezes before the menu options appear. I can't close the program, not even through task manager, except to restart my PC. I took this to resemble what the original post described (crashing before the main menu appears), but perhaps it's a distinct problem...
Let me know if there's additional information I haven't thought of that would be useful to you. I appreciate the help.
If you havn't already, try verifying the game cache for Synergy (and HL2).
Are your games installed in the default locations or on different drives?
- Not required but best if they're both on the same drive, ideally the C drive.
As mentioned earlier make sure HL2 has been run at least to the main menu.
Remove/Re-Install Synergy and try again.
Has Synergy worked for you before, or has it stopped after an update?
- Your profile is private so I can look to see if you've logged hours in game.

What did the trick, though, isn't clear... I retried everything you suggested; oddly, this last time it still froze up and didn't respond; but after 5 minutes, and just before restarting my PC, I saw the menu screen loaded and the app started responding.
