Uplink
Keep getting traced!
Okay I just started out did a couple of simple delete/copy missions. But I've run into a few (level 2 missions no less!) where I keep getting traced early on. I do the whole "connect via 3+ routes things," start up my crack v1.0, and it starts beeping like crazy before I get through the password, and I'm forced to disconnect. What am I doing wrong? Is it better to add more connection nodes between the gateway and the target? The tutorial says at least three, but do I benefit from having more, say as much as 6? Should I be acquiring different software to make the trace slower? Also, in terms of deleting logs, the game says it's sufficient to delete the logs from a single computer in the chain. I've found that it's very easy to simply chain to the Uplink Test computer and delete the log from there, as I always have the password to that one. Is this what I should be doing?

the more bounces you have, the slower the trace is...

the higher level the enemy is, the faster they trace you, so you need even more bounces.

So you go to the phone directory, and add all the servers you can find to you list. Then you make a bounce route with all of them, with the first one through internic, so you can easily remove your ip after each hack.

as long as you have a long bounce list, and you always delete your internic history after each hack, you should never be captured.

also, you can log off before they complete the trace, and delete the internic history, and retry again.
Only 3 bounces and you connect through Rosebud?

Go to InterNIC and type in "Public". Add EVERYTHING that pops up. Disconnect and enter the connection screen. Start with InterNIC and then connect through all the public servers you just added. I'm not sure if this helps, but long connections (like from Australia to Canada) might give more time than short links (like from Japan to Russia) do. When you've made a 20 connection chain, save it. It saves a lot of time than constantly making new chains each time you connect to a target. It helps to make InterNIC and the Uplink Internal Services links different colors to save time later on in the game. As you discover new links, add them to your chain.

Also, ARC have access terminals that pretty much exist to be bounced through. Add them to your chain.
i got a good tip i recently found out.
search for "services" servers and add them all and hack the admin account on each of them and ofcourse delete the logs. this way it should show a rectangle around the box on the world map because u have admin access and admin accounts take much longer to trace you when bounce through those. public access servers dont allow logons so its pretty useless to bounce through them
Interals method is the "quality" method, where mine is the "quantity". I will point out that occasionally, you will lose your admin access if it gets traced to that computer enough, which means that you have to rehack that computer, which means that you might lose access to another computer and the cycle repeats. The downsides of using my method are quicker trace times and a messy connection screen
I usually create accounts in all the banks, then bounce through interNIC > Uplink test-server > all the banks :)
I usually add all Access Terminals and Public Access Servers from InterNic, and I have Upload Test Machine a bit at the very beginning so I can delete all trace logs with a Log Deleter v4. (the ones that say I routed from X to Y)
If your DCing before the trace is complete and still getting caught, its always due to not deleting logs.

Other then InterNic as your first route, the actual servers you route though are entirely irrelevant. I've not noticed any difference in time between servers. Distance between jumps does seems to make a minor difference, but the most important is the amount of jumps.

Generally the first thing I do when starting a game is hit up the directory listings in InterNic, create a 50-70 jump chain (with InterNiC as my first jump obviously) and save it. I then just load that up before every hack, add the final destiation to the end and away we go.

As soon as you complete your hack, reconnect direct to InterNic and wipe logs. And remember to leave your log in log, as otherwise you get traced due to the logs at InterNic being suspicious. Remember, simply logging onto InterNic is not illegal or suspicious. Unless the only record of you on it is logging out. Doesnt take a genious to work out that if your only leaving a diisconnect, your tampering with the logs.

On the topic of deleting logs, make sure that after each time you upgrade LogDeleter to go to InterNIC and get rid of all those messy "{log deleted)" entries, as as the game goes on, missions will start popping up that are pretty much "find the hacker who recently broke into our computers", which Uplink will not allow you to take, because YOU are the target for those missions. LogDeleter V4 will not only erase a log, but also move the other entries around so that it looks like there never was a log to begin with.
Go to Internic, type "public" in the search bar, add all the servers that show up. After that bounce your signal through them all until you get to the desired target, save the route, then your all set and will have plenty of extra time to clear your logs with the deleter or console.
The main thing to do is have within your links all servers which you have admin access for. This is the thing that actually has any reasonable affect on time. the shear amount adds little in comparison. The stronger the server which you have admin for, the longer to trace through. Always have internic as your first ping, and always delete the logs in internic, apart form the one from when you connected.
Government sites and academic sites also tend to add a lot to the trace time, especially if yuou have admin or read/write access on those terminals.
Internic is really a powerful tool, and your friend.
Delete all the logs.

Good idea but eventually the passwords reset so you have to hack them all again.
