Uplink
Proxy servers
The way that proxy servers work in the game, can they do this in real life? I am writing an assignement about securing systems and I felt that this would fit in well

I'm not sure if such servers would help in hacking anything, but in real life proxies can help access restricted sites in a similar way, i.e. you send a request to a proxy server, proxy server redirects the request to the site you need, so that you basically are accessing the site with another IP, retrieves whatever data you need and sends it back to you.
Someone should correct me because I'm probably wrong

I'm just wondering if they can deny access to certain areas like they do in the game like you can't delete or copy a file because the Proxy server doesn't allow it

Ah, this kind of proxies. Internet filtering or malware scanning perhaps, but I think blocking is something that firewalls would normally do. Once again, I'm not an expert

I'll see if I can find anything on Google

the idea of a proxy it so that the said user can connect to certain sites but not others although the most commonly used proxy's are public proxy's and are often used to get around secuity systems, for a example (this is purely hyperthictical) if am at university and want to play internet games on the computers there they have for very good reasons blocked most game sites. There are ways to connect to a proxy (most are blocked) this will use anothers companys internet connection and you will have acess to sites that you normaly may not. So it is like a jump between nodes on uplink and as you get into the better part of the game there are systems that you need to be part of there network to use. this is true there are systems like this and they are used commonly to help improve security these are often servers and such things. Although in the early years of hacking the hackers didn't have the computer power to process what they can now and they would often hack into simple networks such as schools and then basicly use the computers they hacked into, to store and access the internet because these had fater speeds, but things have changed alot for hackers in the more modern age. This game depicts an action that is a crimanal offence in almost all parts of the world and they have changed the game to embrace that, not eveything is completly true to life or hacking, but this game involes the basic consept of hacking into a computer.

Just though i would clarify I am not part of the hacking commuity although i have watched videos on the history of hacking and have a fairly sound knowlege of most computer operations and although i do not support the actions of hackers they are to be repected beacuse they are a group of talented inderviduals who can stop the current world at the press of a few buttons but most of the time they just want information money.

Certainly as far as I know you can't just dial up any server and use it as a proxy - you would need access (such as by haxxing it) to install a proxy server and give yourself a login.
