Left 4 Dead (2) is more story-oriented.
Both games emphasize teamwork. (Left 4 Dead moreso, because of the damn pinning infected).
The only reason I can think of for Killing Floor looking "unfinished" is because it's an Unreal Tournament (2004?) standalone mod.
Bearing in mind that "better" is purely a matter of opinion, I honestly never got all that excited about L4D (or L4D2) survival modes because they just aren't all that much fun to me; campaign and Vs. are great because you have actual difficult (or is it 'preferential'?) decisions to make and the characters are a lot of fun, but survival is just "hold up where you're near ammo until you get overrun". KF forces you to make actual difficult decisions more often than you'd like to with enemies that react differently to gunfire, moving traders, actual tangible ressource management...
Not sure how long you've got on a guest pass, but definitely try it out with friends at least once on Normal long (or harder if you're a masochist) before forming an opinion... Beginner will probably seem really easy and dull, particularly if you're used to how quickly infected react in L4D on higher difficulties... Normal, well... the fleshpound isn't the tank. :P
Left 4 Dead 2 imo resembles Resident Evil 5/ORC in the sense it has nice graphics... but the gameplay is boring and not very much tension.
IMO KF>L4D2
Both are similar as far as incorporating teamwork but if your looking for a classic horror game compared to nice visuals... and well nice visuals get Killing Floor. I heard its $5 on Amazon right now.
