The secret to a good GTAIV framerate
GTAIV PC has poor programming. The first time you launch the game it looks at how much video ram you have, and will fill it to the brim with extra pedestrians and trash objects, murdering performance if you have a videocard with more RAM than 256MB - which is actually how much is in the reccomended system requirement if you look. No matter how fast you think your PC is, if you have a 1GB+ card then it's hopeless for you to ever get a good framerate outside of console command tweaking. If you play at all lowish settings already, and have a decently fast PC then all you have to do is lower your V-RAM usage with the -memrestricrt XXXXXXXXX command i've included. The lower number you use, the higher your framerate will be. The higher number you use, the more V-RAM the game will use at the cost of framerate.

-memrestrict 150000000
-disableimposters

no idea what -disableimposters is or does, but why not just use the good old -nomemrestrict
-norestrictions instead?

Because -nomemrestrict makes the game run WORSE. It's a common misconception that unfortunately gets parroted around here a lot.

gtx 980 and a i7 4770k runs it beautifully (maxed out) @1440p :)
dropping shadows to run it at 85fps is worth it though
my old gtx 680 ran it well at 1920x1200 (also maxed out)

I've upgraded a few times since the game came out and I think I had the bigger jumps in performance when I upgraded the processor over any graphics card upgrade. Dont forget the old 8800 gt can run this game well with medium settings

This game's framerate has extremes between it's highs and lows. You say you get 85 FPS with almost all settings cranked but I assure you that your minimum FPS drops into the 30s running those settings. If your happy with that kind of performance than good for you but that was not the goal of my thread.

Thank you this actually helped :)

-memrestrict made my game load in the world incredibly slow

You didn't put the command in correctly. Not only that but this game always tends to load slow because there are timed logos that appear on startup that arn't dependant on the speed of your computer. It's like a commercial break. A Nicer TV set dosen't shorten your commercial break. The beginning logos appear for a pre set amount of time. There is a crack to skip those and make the game load faster but it breaks multiplayer and all I do in this game is play the amazing multiplayer.

Yep your right - it drops just below 40 fps when pushed. not to much of a problem as gsync makes it feel smoother that the frame rate suggests. hits 144 fps every time there is a cut scene or I drive into a tunnel though :P I've turned shadows back to max though as it doesnt seem to effect my minimum frame rate only my average

You are happy with a 40 FPS framerate I get it. This thread is about maintaining over 60 FPS at all times, please stay on topic. It appears you have absolutely nothing to contribute to the topic at hand.

What -disableimposters does?

Great question and thanks for asking. -disableimposters will disable the fake "atmospheric cars" in the game that are rendered far far into the distance for immersion purposes, however they in fact are fake "imposter cars" that do not really exist. If you try to actually keep one in your sights and run/drive up to it, the car will dissapear in front of your eyes before you ever reach it. Since these imposter cars do not affect or add to gameplay at all and are secondary to game performance to me, my reccomendation is to turn it off. I should mention however that the --memrestrict command, coupled with using lowish graphic settings command is really the primary secret to dramatically boosted performance. -disable imposters helps a little but I added it mainly because I think it's a stupid feature in my opinion up there with fake grain. If I see a car in-game I should be able to reach it.

Right click gta 4 & go into properties, you should see launch options click that & copy & paste commands in there.
