Game breaking bug
So I've done a lot of searching in the past few hours and a lot of troubleshooting and I can't figure it out on my own.

My issue is that whenever I launch the game and press play on the Social Club prompt it'll get to the screen with all the notices about Rockstar and whatnot but it'll freeze. The only way to get it to advance to the screen where you can actually press play to play the game is if I excessively alt-tab to and from the game, but once it gets there it's impossible to move the cursor or do anything.

It's gone to this after working perfectly fine not even 24 hours ago. The only major difference I could come up with on my computer was that I updated Windows 10 to the Creators Update but have since reverted back to the previous version and still have the issue.

I have the same issue actually... reinstalled the game to play it after a long time of not playing. And i cannot even do anything.

I'm afraid I'm also having this problem. Don't know how to solve it though

The only thing I can contribute with is that after some trial and error I found out that if you run the game using your Intel integrated graphics card (usually this is done through the Nvidia control Panel) there is no freezing problem at all and the game works normally (at least for me)

Same goes for me!

It only plays with my integrated graphics, not my graphics card :steamfacepalm:

My guess is that the recent windows 10 update must have done something that messes up the Nvidia driver somehow. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing the Nvidia Drivers but that doesn't fix the problem (at least for me).

I guess we'll just have to wait for Nvidia to release a new driver fully compatible with this new version of Windows 10. Strange though, I have like a dozen games installed at the moment and so far only GTAIV is giving me problems.

ugh I guess I'll try out using my integrated graphics when I'm back on my laptop and update y'all

Surprisingly that was the one thing I didn't try, but I basically did everything else. Reinstall drivers, reinstall the game, revert Windows 10 back to before Creators Update, make sure the game was allowed all permissions on my computer. I really hope that it's just some sort of driver issue because if it's not we might all be SoL because I doubt Rockstar would really want to put any resources towards making this 10 year old game work.

Using integrated graphics did the trick. Looks like it is some kind of driver or Nvidia issue. I hope it gets fixed :\

Unfortunately for me the game runs pretty slow on my integrated graphics, almost unplayable for me, not to mention you can't force AA.

But at least this proves the problem is not the game itself nor the OS, just the Nvidia driver, I also hope they release a new driver soon.

I have mine working again. Nvidia released new drivers within the past few days and running in compatibility mode for Windows 8 have fixed it so try that.

I will have to try that. Time to reinstall. i guess it hated the new Nvidia drivers.
