The game should run fine without this error.
You may also need to remove spaces from the name. This is fairly simple as well:

- If you don't trust links (+1 for being smart), just Google search it yourself.
And no, this won't get you VAC banned or anything weird like that. You're modifying the file that basically tells Steam "this is where Max Payne can be found." Valve couldn't care less what you do to that, you can even modify Steam to look like Windows 10's Metro style with their official Skin support; VAC applies to cheats online that affect other players, and things like Store Bans are for violating their terms of service by manipulating their system to get cheaper games.
I'll probably put this all in a guide soon enough.
What solved this error for me was moving my game directory to the C drive. Turns out my steam library was on another drive.e.g. d:\program files\steam\steamapps\common\MaxPayne etc...
Doesn't work. Steam reinstalls the game to the previous directory after restarting it.
