A really great game.

Obviously the game is lacking in graphics, but if you want a huge world with an equally huge story that is also well written, this might be worth it for you. I definitely enjoyed the game. The following is a brief synopis of the game minus any spoilers.

In this game you are a hand of Avadon, feared and respected by all with limitless resources and powers at your disposal. You are judge, jury, and executioner who exists only to serve and protect the Pact from it's enemies. Now some dark enemy stirs, and as the story unfolds, you slowly work your way towards discovering who that enemy is. During your journey your loyalties will be tested. In the end you will have to make a choice. Remain true to your duty as an agent of Avadon and fight her enemies, abandon her, or rule her yourself.

I chose the sorceress for my first character because I like magic. But the shadowwalker or blademaster would have been pretty advantageous during certain areas of the game where you are by yourself. To be honest, the game is very long. I played it in spurts going for a week on and a week off or so so I didn't get too burned out on it.

I think the game really shines after you start to realize what sort of stuff you should hold onto vs what you should consider garbage (itemwise). The game has a very modern feel to its skill tree, but obviously leans toward a more classic approach to gameplay. It's a lot of fun.

Indeed an excellent RPG with plenty of opportunity for actual role-playing. Took me a bit to get into it when I first got it too, since the start is pretty weak but it picks up fantastically

Awesome game, reminds me good old times with Icewind Dale or Baldurs Gate. Really great "new" oldschool game :) I'm still playing.

Yeah, it doesn't really pick up until after the first dungeon. I almost gave up on it the firsttime I played.

While being an exceptionally well crafted old-style RPG, Avadon is arguably the worst Spiderweb game, at least for me. It's much more linear than most other games, and its engine (the newest that Mr. Vogel built for Avadon and the latest Avernum) offers less options than the older mechanics used in earlier Avernum and Geneforge games (not to mention Exile, of course). If graphics is of no concern to you, you'll definitely enjoy all the other Spiderweb games.

I'm really enjoying this. I have always wanted to get into a Spiderweb game but kept getting distracted by other new shiny things. I have been in the mood for an old school RPG and boy has this fit the bill. I'm about 15 hours and in loving the intrigue and plots of all the various powers that be in the game. There is quite alot going on behind the scenes and looking forward to seeing it resolve. I don't mind the linear storytelling as it helps guide you through the story Vogel is trying to tell. I will probably switch over to Geneforge next, but that is much more difficult early on from what I've seen. Not a bad thing, but another hurdle to getting into the flow.
