Rockstar social club sign-in won't reset password

I've come back to (try) playing this after a fair while and am now unable to sign in to RSC. However I don't recall ever signing in through RSC, I thought Steam might have done it automatically using my steam email address.. am I remembering this wrong?
I've tried resetting the password on all of my email accounts (through rockstar) but nothing gets sent to me.I've checked spam folders on all of them.. nothing.
I seem to be able to log on using an offline profile, but my previous halfway-through game is not saved on it. Any ideas on what to try next?

I've just installed the game for the first time and I can't login either. Something may be wrong with the game's server.

i think that socialclub is no longer working for steam users. i can login from the browser but i keep being rejected to login to all my rockstar games.

I was allowed to create a new account, which I used to enter the game. However, I'm unhappy with VALVE failing to support me on this in a timely manner.

too bad we can't just bypass rockstar social club all together. All I want is to play the game. Not sign up for some useless GFW live clone.
