Aim and Behaviour of AI
I was wondering what everyone else thought of the AI in this game, particularly regarding their aim.

  • The AI act very stupid, being able to run them all over in a car without any of them flinching, to complete an objective is not a challenge.
  • AI may show you no interest at one moment, and then kill you straight after. Their aim is ridiculously good, being able to kill in a matter of seconds after engaging. And even though they do sometimes miss, the fire rate is so great that you have little chance to escape.

I dont believe I am the only one sharing this belief, let me know with a comment below.

Thanks in advance.

I know there are many post about this on the beta tracker (which I have already upvoted). You should go upvote the posts there about the enemy AI.

http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=20002 This is called Zeus AI. If you set it up correctly (follow the instructions/trial and error). It will not work on servers that are not running it, however, it will apply to single player and missions that you create. Again, follow the readme and instructions and it will give you an idea.

I was playing a mission earlier where I had an AI squad mate equipped with a 30 round magazine, and he proceeded to unload all 30 rounds into the ground at the feet of the first enemy we encountered. I guess it was a nice distraction, but rather strange. The next playthrough I went solo, but the enemy AI that I was engaging acted very strangely, two of them low crawling perpendicularly to me, directly in front of me, for a good 30 seconds. The next playthrough, I began picking off AI from a good distance, and the only unit brazen enough to fight back at me ran in a serpentine pattern ... directly at me, well within 100m...

They are suicidal, crazy, and quite stupid, but they are charming in their own way. Keep repeating to yourself ... this game is a simulation environment, for human AI to act right they require the processing power of a human brain. We have it starting to show up on our desktops now, but at the moment it's rather busy rendering the rest of the game environment, not one individual soldier. :D

Also, most AI mods like that definitely help a lot with their behavior patterns, but sadly do nothing for their neurological problems. They may flank better and act less suicidally, though.

The Final 2 patches (especially the Release update) are said to have various AI fixes and enhancements.

They said before release they are going to work as hard as possible on the AI.

They didn't fix it before because AI isn't top priority.
People handled it in Operation Flashp- (sorry, ArmA Cold War), Armed Assault, ArmA 2, and it's expansions, so they can sure as hell handle it in ArmA 3.

I hate it when people say "The community will fix it, heres "X" Mod, or "Y" Mod".
It makes me feel like people are trying to push people away from giving the actual game a try.

it's like saying Skyrim sucks without mods.
It doesn't.
The community brainwashed Skyrim people though, to rely on mods and making people think the mods make the game better, when they don't.
I know a friend who bought Skyrim, played it for 10 minutes, and then downloaded like 20 mods for it.

He barely played the damn thing and he already overloaded it with mods because "the community does a better job at making the game".

I agree, nobody seems to like base Arma. Everyone wants to mod the crap out of it as if the game is never good enough for most people.

I'm going to start modding when the game is out. Main reason is that I don't like this whole future concept and mumbo-jumbo guns. And I want AI acting less stupid! Give me a M4 and I'm ready to go!

Arma is a series that has benefited from mods in the past. Most notable is the ACE mod which in my opinion makes the game so much better.

I'm with you on all points. And will do the same, when possible. But don't forget ACRE. :)

Same with The Elder Scrolls games but at least we can mod them to our tastes. I praise the devs for allowing it.

I've just started playing this game so i can't comment on what things were like in previous games, that being said i have played alot of FPS games and the aim in this game is shocking. Im dead on target yet it takes multiple hits even if they are head shots. These guys heads must be made out of wood! Give me a rifle not one of these plastic assault rifles. I don't want no made at mattel m16's style weapons that can't hit the broadside of a barn. This ain't nam and i don't need to fire 250 rounds to hit one dude!

The NPC's see you through grass and automaticaly detect where you are. These guys are also like olympic gold medal shooters they miss once or twice too give you the feel of being in combat then one shot you when you're half in cover. The UI is clunky going from prone to crouch takes too long. Reloading a weapon is silly i can't move once i start too reload or take an action.

I like the game but its hell frustrating with its clunky controls. A need button too wipe my arse in this game.

turn down AI accuracy. This isn't a typical FPS, so movement is affected by weight. The more crap you cary, the slower your guy will change positions and faster he will tire out. Don't reload in the open. Plan your route so you don't get stuck in the open wiping your ♥♥♥♥, and use some tactics.

Hans Blitz Feb 10, 2014 @ 10:29am
Oh i use tactic's they just shoot me before i can even get a chance to displace.

Didn't know about turning down the AI accuracy tho, I don't normally want an easier game so i never look for that kinda of thing.
Pèpè Silvia Feb 10, 2014 @ 6:05pm
well the AI is still "artificial", in that they will never act the same as a human. They have a set of rules that they follow, and sometimes that doesn't jive with what a human player would do. To compensate for dumb ai, they have to somehow be able to track the player thru obstacles/terrain by sound, sight, and reports from other AI's. However in doing this, sometimes they are way too accurate or exact, so lowering their accuracy kind of balances this problem.

For example, I use a fairly high AI Skill (this determines how they react, communicate, and engage targets); but a lower AI Accuracy. So this way they will still behave smart(er), but when they do engage they don't pop you in the head with one or two shots.

search for the *username*.Arma3profile in your My Documents folder, and edit it with a text editor like notepad. Find the difficulty you play on (Recruit, Regular, Veteran, Mercenary) and edit the precisionEnemy=x.xxxx to something lower. I use ~0.55 and it seems to work pretty good, giving me a fair ammount of time to find cover before getting shot

I used to think that Arma 3 AI was stupid(still is) but is not! I have seen the way they move and change strategies fast from time to time, changing from one corner to another, laying down on the ground, entering buildings. My two big issues is that they have the perfect aim (but I have to tell you soldiers in real life actually have that kind of aim for short-mid range) and they always repeat the same strategies once and once again.

Sometimes they're totally bad-asses and sometimes they're dumb as f*ck. It's kind hard to find balance between both.
