was given this game as a gift

and I have not been able to SUCCESSFULLY "install" it or add it to my steam library. It show up but when I click "play" an error dialog box says it's stopped working, any one else? any ideas?

Try right-clicking on the game in the library and go to properties > local files > verify intergrity of game cache... and let it do it's thing. Then try launching the game again. I hope that works.
