hey bud at the top of the steam browser is the view tab, select it and scroll down and you will find the opotion called SERVERS, thats your multiplayer, then down the bottm left there is a tab called game, select this and change your filter to AvP and it will give you all the AvP online games, enjoye

very small. I've been watching the server populations and the last 3 weeks have been the lowest I've seen in years...maybe since launch. These days I regularly see the total count range from 0-20. Normally the average is 12-40 players but lately it's been down. Weekends generally brings in 40-60 players and when game goes on sale it spikes to 80 players which slowly taper off over a 3 week span.

Don't buy the game for the multiplayer...unless you're willing to dump money for the sale price and work with the small player pool which exhibits high ping, exploits and hacking. There are servers that claim to ban hackers but I'm not low enough ping to bother checking as I'll never play there.
