5 years late opinion about the mod
SPOILERS ALERT(Im 5 years late, but still)(got some kind of error posting this on mod comment page, hmm)
I was a bit dissapointed. My expectations was a bit high, but only rightfully so. I'd learn about mod from standalone game article (and if this mod is getting fundings and standalone and Enderal doesnt, it has to be spectacular!). While it was as good made as promised, with own music, voice acting, etc, I found its lacking in depth and length something greatly:
1. I complited and saw everything under about 4 hours and I wasn't running yolo, I took my time.
2. Story was okay, but has no depth to it, not even double bottomed, no unexpected turns. I found the good ending on second hour and didnt believe that was it. Then I remembered about different endings, quickloaded and got true good ending after another 2h. Could've done faster but was experimenting and trying to find nonexistent content.
3. Not really honest description. I want to comment on it line by line:
murder mystery investigation - It wasnt murder investigation, we got no murder itself, no crimescene, no evedence, no ring of suspects. By the autor's rules, dwarven law could be broken also by thieving, assaulting, but it used only to restrict the player, no other uses inside the story.
using your wits - Nah, you really railroad to good ending and have to just look around for true good ending.
ability to travel through time - the absolute necessary number of resetting the scene for true good ending is 0. No time travel puzzel too, like changing things in the past to use in the present.
dark, non-linear story - It was unpleasant inside Jarl's locked room, yes, but really no other 'dark' moments in the story. What was non-linear here with 2 straight roaded endings?
interrogate suspects - clicking through dialogs coz almost no choices requared or interrogating needed.
explore the city and its many secrets - No secrets at all and not much exploring 1 big room, 2 corridored castles and dozen of small rooms.
navigate challenging moral dilemmas - What dilemmas? I got only one dilemma - wheater or not free the woman at once. And it got really no consequences if I dont and even if I go expose Jarl to himself.
features multiple endings - three is multiple, I guess. But are 'the bad, the good, and the best' endings a feature nowadays?
4. Very poor level and equipment balance. We got here with all our loot and level. Tho it'll be okay for 5lvl toons, I was breezing though it on my '86lvl mastercrafted legendary skill leveled annihilator of worlds' character. And got really annoyed with all locks are master noncense. If autor had put a single thought in it, we could've started in rugs with our fists only, but.. oh well, I could go longer than the mod itself about it.
Now you see what I mean there, what got me dissapointed? I was expecting 6-8hours of active gameplay of mystery investigation. The autor wrote the description like this, not me! I was expecting a story like The Orien Express + Groundhog Day where everyone is a suspect and I get to investigate them one by one, resetting time til I get to the bottom of this. Or something like this.
But I'm not really blaming anyone, this expectation was mine and only mine, build solely on my previous experinces. Just wanted to say that I was dissapointed and that I hope the autor will not waste the gigantic potential of his ideas in standalone project like he did here.
