When you level up, your health increases, allowing you to just tank the damage and wait for recovery (or use items if needed).
The stat upgrades being "capped" by damage is a balancing feature. Without it, you would be able to get infinite amounts of stats with no effort at all. In vanilla Qud it's TECHNICALLY possible to do that with Eater's Nectar and a lot of save-scumming, but I wanted to keep robots mostly in-line with the typical player experience.
