Guidebook to Surviving
A discussion tab made to serve you as a guidebook to surviving in JMOD

Introduction (few words from me)

Despite there being a convar to spawn with toolbox, it is quite rudimentary and overpowered so I'd advise you to disable it in your first playthrough.

Crafting a workbench (beginnings)

You begin with only bare hands, perhaps without any props around.
Yet, that's still fixable!
Type *inv* into your chatbox (alternatively bind jmod_ez_inv to something) and it'll open an inventory of yours, get used to it.

What you need right now is to craft a workbench by pressing handcraft.
As you have no props around yet, you should press Scrounge, which will spawn some props around you.
You wont be able to scrounge again on same spot for some time, so prepare to move a lot.

You can also put props and entities into your inventory by pressing grab (alternatively bind jmod_ez_grab to something)

Once you've gathered enough resources for crafting a crafting table, press Handcraft once again. That's how you get your first crafting station.

Crafting Table can be used as a furnace, but has to be fueled with wood first. You can get wood and other raw materials by throwing props into workbench (only works with those props you can pick up with interaction key, which is E)

Resources you put around Crafting Table can be used in crafting with it.

Basic Work Tools
Labor has turned a monkey into human.
-Friedrich Engels

The next step in moving to modern age is to get yo hands doin some physical work!
You can craft such tools as: Axe, Shovel, Bucket and Pickaxe by combining Wood and Steel (which can be gathered by salvaging various metal props from scrounging)

  • Bucket can be used to scoop water from water sources (duh!) for later use in farming and as a fuel for some machines. Use M1 to scoop water and M2 to place it as a 50-unit barrel

  • Shovel can be used to dig out sand, which can be put in furnace for processing into glass or diamonds. Digging on sandy surfaces has a low chance of spawning antlions, which can be hacked into organic and chemicals.

You can also craft a toolbox, which is used to craft bombs, machines and constraints. It requires energy and gas to craft with, so I'll talk about it later.

Lumbering & Farming

You might have found acorns or seeds when scavenging before. They can be planted by pressing ALT+E on them and require water to grow.
They provide you with organic (which can be used to craft food) and other important early-game resources.

Trees are grown from acorns, and take long time to grow up and require constant water supply to live. :tree_green:
Adult Trees drop Apples and Acorns, both can be salvaged into organic. Apples can be eaten by pressing ALT+E.
You can use an axe to chop down a tree, which will drop Wood and sometimes Rubber.

Adult corn plants can be collected into corns by pressing ALT+E
Mature Wheat can be digged out with shovel to get some organic.

Mining Ores (and miscellaneous stuff)

If you've crafted a pickaxe, then you can start mining away!!! :GDCreep:

First of all, you should find an ore deposit, which can be found by walking around and hitting ground. Resources are spread all around the map, so prepare to walk a lot.

Here's the full list of resources you can gain from mining:
  • Coal
The most common fuel type, obviously better than wood

  • Tungsten
Rarely used in machines and armor parts

  • Gold
    Makes you very rich ayo
    Used in crafting endgame materials

  • Titanium
    Used in crafting endgame materials

  • Diamond
    Used in crafting endgame materials

  • Silver
    Used in crafting endgame materials

  • Copper
Ore which is used in crafting many things

  • Uranium
Used to craft fissile material (which is later used to craft Nuclear Bombs)

  • Iron (steel)
Ore which is basically used in almost every craft

  • Aluminium
Ore which is used instead of Steel in some crafts

  • Platinum
    IDK

  • Lead
    Used in crafting ammo

  • Water
    Used in many early-game recipes

  • Oil
Can be processed in a fuel refinery for some endgame resources.

  • Geothermal Source
Can be used with geothermal generator to generate power.

Toolbox

Now, you should craft toolbox, which requires basic parts to craft.
To craft basic parts, you'll have to get rubber, glass, copper, aluminium, steel and plastic (which can be gained by salvaging certain props.)
If you've read all those chapters above, then this shall be an easy task for you!

If you did everything correctly, then toolbox should already be in your inventory.
Toolbox can be used to salvage stuff for resources, and unlike crafting table it is possible to disassemble big props now.

The next step in progression is quite boring, as you'll have to keep scrounging until you find a car wreck.
Once you've found your car, you should hold M2 to salvage it. It will drop a lot of materials, counting some precision parts needed for crafting Workbench, you'll probably need to search for 2 or 3 cars, as it doesn't drop enough amount to craft needed. :crying_yeti:

Another thing you should look for is a battery prop, which gives you power.
You can use it to charge your toolbox by pressing ALT+E or craft gas by combining it with water. (gas canister prop will work as well)

Once you gathered enough resources, you shall be able to craft a workbench now.
You can also craft a ground scanner to find resources more efficiently, or pumpjack to get oil.

Once you get a workbench, it's all up to you on how to progress, you could fight your friends or craft a nuclear bomb!

Have Fun! :steamhappy:
This guidebook is still work in progress, I'll occasionally write more stuff here.

Disassemble cars using a toolbox (thats described in the guide)
you also can get precision parts by using fabricator or order 80 in aid radio (the supply radio)
