just make somthing on the lift and place it near a tree, i build just a platform out of concrete and put an arm onto it with a saw at the end.
I had the same problem, but had built a simple vehicle for delivering crates from my raft to the trader so just slapped a saw on the front for cutting down large trees. Once felled, the handheld axe can cut up the rest of the large trees.
The tool works on the smaller trees to fell them but not on the largest trees. You first need a saw to knock them down and then you can use the axe. Also every swing of a tool eats at your water / food where using a vehicle does not impact water / food as much.
But this is also the fun of Scrap Mechanic / Raft Mechanic, there is no one way to do things, you can make your own creations or use the tools provided.
