Save Our Ship 2

Ship Battle difficulty rating?
What in general are the factors that contribute to the difficulty of ship battles? I built a fairly large ship while being hidden with a cloaking device, and have turned off cloak now that I am mostly done and have functional shields / weapons / heatsink.

I've noticed that the ship battles forced on me (i.e, not scanned down that you can decide to approach or not), tend to be fairly difficult. With names like "dreadnaught", or a small "fleet" of multiple corvettes and things.

Does the "value" of your ship count towards getting the harder fights, or is it some other metric like heat capacity? Thanks!

Apologies if this has been asked. I searched back through the topics and did not appear to find an onpoint discussion.

Has everything to do with power sources and number of weapons. If you have ludicrous power from other mod sources and just a few guns, try to scale back on power output and diminish your signature.

If that's not enough, mod settings has difficulty slider (requires a save and exit to desktop & reboot.)

Perfect, thank you! I am generally able to hold my own, although most fights have me coming out with like 60/70+ percent total heat capacity used on shields. But I certainly wasn't expecting most of the encounters to press my ship so hard.

I am using RimAtomics to generate power and planned a large reactor room -- putting out about 600K+ power, which would explain it.

60/70+ percent total heat capacity is still pretty good. If your shields don't break and they still die out, it's working just fine.

Got it. Thanks again!

If you're like me and had a bit of a rough learning curve, the Difficulty option in the Mod settings makes a huge difference. It multiplies your combat points vs the enemy ships' combat points when picking who you should fight. AFAIK it normally picks an enemy between 0.5 and 1.5 your strength, so a Difficulty setting of 0.5 would be between 0.25 and 0.75 your strength. Way easier.

Good to know. I try to build aesthetic ships so my process usually is that I will launch the cockpit / bridge "box" with the bare minimum needed to get a ship into orbit, together with a cloaking device. Then will spend a couple of seasons ferrying materials up and building out the rest of the "skeleton" and then fill it in. During this process there isn't any sort of good balance between weapons / heat capacity / power, then I turn it on at the end and kind of see what happens. This has led to me getting hard encounters right away because I will shove in a nuclear power generator from RimAtomics and pull 500K power right off the bat -- which apparently is not a great idea for threat generation. XD

The above responses are all very helpful for me to try and change the process a bit and be more mindful of balancing the various stats. XD
