The movement is automated
Place the ships you want to use on your secret area (only the ships, be careful not to take cards or tokens with them), then press the 'Assign Dials' button next to your secret zone.
This will place the maneuvers of each ship in the zone. After deploying the ships in the playmat, pick a maneuver of each ship, flip it and place it in the board. When you want to move, press the 'Flip' button in the dial, and then press the 'Move' button, the ship will move automatically.
The game will automatically resolve collisions too!

I wouldnt say that it is fully automated. Lets take Ved Foslo's ability for example. Doing a 1 turn is a pain when the templates wont fit properly. Either a Pilot like him needs a additional tool (like for the star viper barrel rolls) or just a modified dial set.
