When playing as the Empire and the Death Star is part of your space force clicking on the space station vertically stacked to the left to upgrade sections of the space station causes the Death Star to fire and destroy the planet. After some further tests it seems like the two left upgrades cover the Death Star firing controls but the DS primary fire is still active, so when you assume you are pressing upgrade space station you instead destroy the planet.

After the planet is unfortunately destroyed due to a technical problem ;D the two upgrade options seem unresponsive but it is possible to activate them by clicking in the bottom right corner of the upgrade buttons.
