OpenGrid Large Exchange

Part of the OpenGrid Project

This large exchange, built in 1919, was once a busy manned telephone exchange, with teams of women working around the clock to take calls.

In the late 50's, automatic switchboards became common and this exchange converted, forcing everyone out of a job except for a few technicians.

Then, in the 90's this exchange soon became internet enabled, connecting 1000's of people to the web.

In 2003 to keep up with demand from the popularity of the internet and the ever expanding city, the modern extension to the rear of the building was built to the highest of specification.

This exchange serves primarily FTTC connections to residential users and lease line fibre services to businesses. It can still provision and serve phone lines just like any other exchange.
