Pick Your Byzantine Coat of Arms

Description
Pick your favorite Roman coat of arms via a start game decision. Exactly like the new Roads to Power name option, but for the CoA. Features multiple symbols used by the empire throughout the centuries, including summaries of when they were introduced and what they represented. Including:

Single-headed aquila of the ancient legions.

Constantine's chi-rho. Allegedly, literally, the stuff of dreams. It was used from the 4th century up through the Justinianic dynasty in the 7th century as the main symbol of Rome.

The stepped cross potent was introduced by Heraclius and used up until the Macedonians. This reflected the shift in larger Christian iconography from christograms to the cross and icons. This also what will show up if you pick the Pantokrator in the rules, but the empire turns Iconoclast.

The use of the Pantokrator icon as a state symbol was started by Justinian II, with Basil I making it a hallmark of the Macedonians. Yet another shift towards more explicit identification with the faith. Emperors (and only emperors) stamped their letters and coins with the J-man because they wanted the recipient to know they spoke with the authority of the almighty. Not even the popes dared to try that one.

Finally, there are variations of the Tetragrammatic cross used in the Palaiologan period. There's the well known version with firesteels, and the more accurate version using Betas. This is the final evolution of the Roman standard.

Note that the double eagle was not, per the sources I reviewed, an actual imperial symbol. It was a symbol of the Komnenoi and Palaiologioi families. So I didn't include it. If I ever extend this to family CoA's, okay maybe. There's also bonus CoA based on a coin with the old crest of Byzanton that will show up if the Greeks turn to Islam. Note that this is based on the emperor, not the state faith, since I couldn't find documentation on the latter.

Special thanks to Dumbarton Oaks and their amazing online collection of coins and seals. Check it out at www.doaks.org

I'm pretty sure that 'IC IX NIKA' is actually IC XC NIKA.

IC (Ιησούς Χριστός) XC (Χριστός Σωτήρ) NIKA (νικάω)

Updated to 1.14, not that anything game-wise has changed with the new version.

Added a circle around the Chi Rho since that is typically how it's depicted in mosaics and engravings such as the Kisan Gate in Damascus.

Tweaked IC IX NIKA for legibility.

Commented out Madrid Skylitzes options. The more I dug into sources, the less confidence I had in the miniatures within it. Wikipedia's article doesn't exactly quote its sources correctly.

Revised Cross Potent on Pedestal (again). Think I'm finally happy with that one.

Also added a few options that date from the 10th-11th century black hole where there's no definitive proof of what the empire actually used on banners. Two are based on the Madrid Skylitzes and feature a less-potent cross potent. The third is based on some bronze follis coins introduced in the late Macedonia and retained until Alexios eliminated copper coinage. This particular pattern has a cross and IC IX NIKA in the field (basically, "Christ victorious"). Variations of that phrase had been a common battle cry of Byzantine armies since the 600's at minimum. Seems like an obvious addition since we know the design existed and that it fits the general CK3 time frame.

At this point, I'm running out of plausible banners outside of co-opting more Orthodox icons. While Romanitas and Orthodoxy were hard to separate, this isn't a religion mod.

In regards to purple standards, the Romans largely stuck with the gold-on-red combo in use since the days of the legions. There are some accounts or depictions of a silver cross on red. The emperors themselves are sometimes shown with (possibly ceremonial) labarums featuring gems on gold silk. The one thing that has never come up is an account of them flying a purple standard.

Just subbed to this. Excited to see how you develop this mod further.:steamhappy:

My expertise is in Roman and Byzantine history. Which is why I knew the stock CoA is wrong for the period (and might not have ever been flown by the actual Romans) It's also why I knew most other mods covering Byzantine CoA's are also wrong. I know how MY mod is wrong or incomplete.

While I'm not opposed to doing something similar for other states, I wouldn't necessarily know where to begin. As much time as I spent learning the Paradox scripting conventions, I put in far more time researching the period.

If anything, I'd be more likely to expand on this mod to other Byzantine titles. The various themes don't use authentic symbols, though I'm afraid there isn't enough sources to ever properly correct that. Which is a shame, because despite the popular opinion that the Romans never adopted heraldry, they were in fact early adopters of a lot of heraldic ideas. The empire simply died before the peak of heralrdry and what they did have was burned by Crusaders and Turks.

Very nice, I very much like the fact that you use the game rule system.
Do you plan on making other similar mods ?
