鸟海号重巡洋舰是日本帝国海军高雄级重巡洋舰的四号舰。于1931年下水，其多次作为旗舰参与了太平洋战争的战役中。鸟海和摩耶原定于1941年内进行缩小舰桥的现代化改装，但由于12月美日开战而没有进行。该舰在1942年8月作为第八舰队司令官三川军一的旗舰参与了萨沃岛海战，并在第三次所罗门海战期间被美军飞机击伤。鸟海号于1944年10月在萨马岛海战中被美军飞机投下的炸弹严重损毁，同日被日军驱逐舰用鱼雷击沉（2019年RV Petrel研究船发现鸟海号残骸中鱼雷完好无损）。直到沉没，鸟海号装备的高射炮和鱼雷发射管与高雄级其他三艘船皆不同。
Chokai was the fourth ship of the Takao class heavy cruisers in the Imperial Japanese Navy. Launched in 1931, it served multiple times as a flagship in battles during the Pacific War. Chokai and Maya were originally scheduled for a modernization project to reduce the size of their bridge structures in 1941, but this was postponed due to the outbreak of war between the US and Japan in December of that year. In August 1942, Chokai served as the flagship of Vice Admiral Gunichi Mikawa in the Battle of Savo Island and was damaged by American aircraft during the Third Battle of the Solomon Sea. Chokai was severely damaged by bombs dropped by American aircraft during the Battle of Samar Island in October 1944, and on the same day, it was torpedoed and sunk by Japanese destroyers. (The wreck of Chokai was discovered by the research vessel RV Petrel in 2019 with its torpedoes intact.) Until its sinking, Chokai was equipped with anti-aircraft guns and torpedo tubes that differed from the other three ships of the Takao class.
