ER2 Matildas

Description

An unusual example of the British tank design, Matilda was designed to fullfil the role of an infantry support tank. It was very well protected for its time and it was armed with a 40mm QF 2-pdr gun that was reasonably effective against most of contemporary armored vehicles. Due to the British doctrine at the time, its rather limited mobility was not considered an issue, as an infantry support tank was designed to accompany the infantry and, as such, move roughly at the same speed.

While it did see a limited action during the 1940 Battle of France, its most famous appearance was during the initial period of the North African campaign where its thick armor proved to be very effective against Italian anti-tank weapons. For these early successes Matilda quickly earned itself the "Queen of the Desert" nickname. But its limited mobility became its downfall when the forces of Afrika Korps started utilizing 88mm AA guns in large numbers, which led to the slow withdrawal of the tank from the British service. A number of Matilda tanks was later sent to other countries, such as USSR and Australia, as military aid in the following years.

Features:

Two versions of the Matilda II tank: basic Matilda II and Matilda II CS
4-man crew: driver, gunner, commander (with a functioning rotating periscope) and loader (because there is no such functionality in ER2, he is there simply as a passenger and a spare crew member).
40mm (10/60 HE/AP shots)/76mm (40/20 HE/Smoke, using 76mm M1 gun shots as a placeholder) main gun and 7.92mm co-axial machine gun.
