The Metallivores didn't just create the Hedrons; they also managed to somehow capture and modify a regular Zemplix. The result? The Metallivores' "pets", the Landplix. They don't have wings anymore, and their arms have been transformed into "wing-flags" that glow to help Metallivores and other Landplix know where they are through the snowstorms (you have to remember they live on an ice world). They only live for a thousand years, as the Metallivores have modified them to die after that amount of time to prevent overpopulation, not to mention they get some food out of it as well.
