Description
Roosevelt Warehouse (Industries) by RoomMic

This is an Industries version of the original asset.

It's a blue world.

The Roosevelt Warehouse is an Albert Kahn-designed Art Deco commercial warehouse in the Corktown neighborhood of Detroit. Built in 1936 for the U.S. Postal Service, it was known as the Roosevelt Park Post Office annex. It was designed to handle mail coming off of trains calling at the neighboring Michigan Central station, with a conveyor tunnel connecting the two. By the 1980s, Detroit Public Schools was using the warehouse as their book depository.

In March of 1987, a huge fire engulfed the structure, collapsing skylights and destroying all school materials in the building. After this, the building was abandoned by DPS and sat derelict and rotting for the next 30 years, similarly to MCS next door (abandoned 1985). In 2009, a homeless man was found frozen in water at the bottom of elevator shaft inside, which sparked a media frenzy over the issues Detroit is plagued with.

In 2018, Ford Motor Co. announced it was proceeding with a renovation of the station, the warehouse, and other buildings in the vicinity. As of 2022, the renovation is nearly complete.
