Heirs of Saint Maron

Beskrivning
Heirs of Saint Maron is a lightweight mod that adds the Maronite Church to Crusader Kings III. The Maronites are an ethnoreligious group whose religious practices trace to the fourth-century monk and missionary Saint Maron, for whom they are named. Originally emerging as a Syriac group præsent throughout Greater Syria, the movement has been centered in the Lebanon since shortly after the election of its first Patriarch, Saint John Maron, in AD 685.

What's Included
  • Adds Maronitism as a Christian faith, præsent in Tripoli in both 867 and 1066
    • Tenets: Communal Identity, Communion, Monasticism
    • Notable Doctrines: Familial Kinslaying Criminal
    • Holy Sites: Jerusalem, Rome, Antioch (same effects as vanilla)
      • Kfarhi (Baalbek): +5 Advantage in Desert Mountains terrain, +5 Advantage in Controlled Territory
      • Yanouh (Tripoli): +5 House Opinion
    • Three creatable Holy Orders with custom coats of arms: the Order of Saint George, the Order of Saint Maron, and the Mardaites
  • Adds the Maronite Patriarchate as the Maronite Head of Faith title, with historical Patriarchs
  • Adds a decision for a Maronite king or emperor to Restore the Patriarchs to Antioch, reëstablishing the Maronite Patriarch in his titular see
  • Adds a decision for any king or emperor owning Tripoli (or Antioch, if restored) to Vassalize the Maronite Patriarchate
  • Adds a dynamic event for the Maronite Church to restore relations with Rome, gaining the Ecumenical special tolerance doctrine and removing relations penalties with Catholics, under certain circumstances:
    • Following a successful Catholic crusade in the Levant (as happened historically)
    • If the Maronite Patriarch is vassalized by a Catholic lord
    • If the Maronite Patriarch or his Maronite liege has a close Catholic relation
    • If a Catholic lord establishes his court in the same county as a Maronite holy site
  • Adds the Patriarchal Regalia artifact as a gift from the Pope following communion with Rome, granting the Maronite Patriarch +1 Learning per Piety Level and +3 Clergy Opinion.
  • Adds several other minor flavor details, with more planned for the future. Stay tuned!
Heirs of Saint Maron is currently localized in English only, although a Chinese localization is in development. You are welcome to contribute localizations in other languages!

Compatibility and Reüse
Heirs of Saint Maron was developed for Crusader Kings III v 1.8 ('Robe') and is neither Ironman nor achievement compatible. Additionally, as it overwrites the Christianity definitions file, it is not compatible with any other mod that adds new or changes existing Christian faiths, nor with any other mod that overwrites the history definition for the province of Tripoli.

If you wish to incoporate Heirs of Saint Maron into your mod, in whole or in part, you are free to do so, and to edit it freely in doing so, under the following conditions:
  1. The primary purpose of your mod must not be to add the Maronite Church to Crusader Kings III.
  2. Your mod must not be compatible with this mod, such that the two could simply be installed independently.
  3. You must credit Heirs of Saint Maron and link to this page on your Steam Workshop, Paradox Mods, or any other such listing page for your mod.

Known Issues
As Maronitism is at game start limited to a single province under hostile Muslim rule, it is entirely likely that, unless it is actively fostered by the player, the faith will quickly cease to exist outside the court of the Patriarch. This is simply the nature of it being a small, localized faith. This mod primarily serves to provide some minor flavor and to add a faith tradition otherwise absent from the game, in order to provide opportunities for players to interact therewith, such as via conversion or by creating custom Maronite characters.

As the faith is not considered ecumenical at game start, it can rarely be spawned as a heresy for ecumenical Christian faiths if the 'strict regional heresies' rule is not active. Although this does not make a great deal of sense, other ethnoreligious groups such as Insularism and the Krstjani are likewise valid heresies under these conditions in vanilla Crusader Kings III, and as such I have not sought to specifically exclude Maronitism, either.

While it is now possible for multiple faiths to share a head, for the sake of the flavor tied to the title within the mod, I have opted not to replace the Maronite Patriarch with the Pope as the Maronite head of faith upon the restoration of communion with Rome.

As a Maronite, I appreciate this mod. Thank you!

I've just been to Baalbeck. The city is located in the Plain of Becca, a plateau between mount Liban and Mount Antiliban, which is surprisingly fertile place. (as much as the valley of Quadisha) I would have suggestted something about growth and developpement, but mountain advantage still works.

As a small update to the previous discussions, if any problem did exist, it should no longer be relevant as of Heirs of Saint Maron v 1.3, which removes faith-based relationship penalties altogether between Catholics and Maronites in communion with one another.

Deo Gratias!

@Amaxe I've done some further testing and cannot seem to replicate the issue; the opinion immediately changes from hostile to astray as soon as the event fires [i.imgur.com].

Are you perhaps mistaking the restoration of the patriarchs event for the reünion of the churches?

If not, I'd be very interested to see your save file, if you'd be kind enough to upload it to Dropbox or the like (you can add me on Steam if you don't want to share the link publicly). Thanks!

@Amaxe That definitely sounds like a bug, as they should show as 'astray,' and in my previous testing this worked as intended. I'll look into this and see if I messed something up or if perhaps there's some particular set of circumstances that's preventing the relation from updating. Thank you for letting me know!

I like the mod. One thing I noticed yesterday though is after bringing about the reunion, the Catholics and Maronites are still being shown as hostile to each other. Is that deliberate, an oversight, or just something that the CK3 engine does and can’t be fixed?
