LMS / British Rail PHV ICI Stone Hoppers

In 1936, after the introduction of the brand new Stanier 8Fs, the LMS sought a high capacity wagon for carrying the large amounts of lime quarried from Tunstead quarry, a short distance from Buxton, to the lime kilns at the Imperial Chemical Industries works in Northwich. Thanks to the incredible power of the 2-8-0 8Fs, the wagons were able to be made rather large for maximum capacity.

They continued use throughout dieselisation, being headed by various traction including class 20s, 25s and 37s. The wagons were used up until the late 1990s, with the last of the type being withdrawn sometime in 1997 or 1998. In their latter years they saw use with Mainline, LoadHaul and EWS traction, which was mostly 37s. Two wagons have been preserved by the 8F Preservation Society at the Severn Valley Railway.
