Religion Fixes

Description
[VERY VERY OUT OF DATE (currently updating)]

This mod fixes several issues with religions in the game.

Many of the religions seemed to not have a lot of thought put into them. Unfortunately it is very hard to accurately represent the authentic religious views and practices of people in the medieval ages in the game. In real life there are many complexities and contradictions in how certain things were approached in several religions and cultures, and I had to make many compromises when making this mod in an attempt to represent this. However I believe at the moment that this mod is the closest you can get to historical accuracy when it comes to religions in the game.

I recommend you use my other mod, 'Norse Huscarls Instead of Champions', alongside this mod:

The main changes are as follows:
- Slavic paganism is no longer fundamentalist - fundamentalism for Slavic religion makes no sense, as at the time Slavs and other pagans didn't even have a concept of religion. When the Christians arrived, Jesus was to them just the patron deity of the Christians, and they would have believed in him just as much as they believed in their own gods. This facet of their culture was made use of in their conversion, which is why a lot of mythical creatures and fairy-tales originating from old Slavic mythology persist in Slavic countries to this day.
- Slavic paganism is now polygamous. I decided in favor of polygamy as opposed to concubinage because Mieszko had seven wives before converting to Christianity, and polygamy makes the Slavs more distinct from other pagan religions around them.
- Pagans now accept witchcraft. For some bizarre reason it was illegal for both Norse and Slavic pagans in vanilla. Both Slavs and Norse made use of folk healers and seers who fall under witchcraft.
- Same sex relations are now illegal in Catholicism and Islam, and shunned in pagan religions - it was the opposite beforehand.
- Changes names of religions from Asatru to Norse and from Slovanskan Pravda to Slavic.
- Norse holy warriors are now called Einherjar instead of huscarls. This isn't particularly historically accurate but neither is calling holy warriors huscarls, and Einherjar is at least more interesting.
- There have also been some other minor tweaks to doctrines of several other religions, to make them a little more historically accurate.

Concerning Norse magic:

"The archaeological record for Viking Age society features a variety of graves that may be those of North Germanic seeresses. A notable example occurs at Fyrkat, in the northern Jutland region of Denmark. Fyrkat is the site of a former Viking Age ring fortress, and the cemetery section of the site contains among about 30 others a grave of a woman buried within a horse-drawn carriage and wearing a red and blue dress with gold thread, all signs of high status. While the grave contains items commonly found in female Viking Age graves (such as scissors and spindle whorls), it also contains a variety of other rare and exotic items. For example, the woman wore silver toe rings (otherwise unknown in the Scandinavian record) and her burial contained two bronze bowls originating from Central Asia.[11]

In addition, the grave contained a small purse that itself contained seeds from henbane, a poisonous plant, and a partially disintegrated metal wand, used by the seeresses in the Old Norse record. According to the National Museum of Denmark:

If these seeds are thrown onto a fire, a mildly hallucinogenic smoke is produced. Taken in the right quantities, they can produce hallucinations and euphoric states. Henbane was often used by the witches of later periods. It could be used as a "witch's salve" to produce a psychedelic effect, if the magic practitioners rubbed it into their skin. Did the woman from Fyrkat do this? In her belt buckle was white lead, which was sometimes used as an ingredient in skin ointment.[11]
Henbane's aphrodisiac properties may have also been relevant to its use by the seeress.[12] At the feet of the corpse was a small box, called a box brooch and originating from the Swedish island of Gotland, which contained owl pellets, and bird bones. The grave also contained amulets shaped like a chair, potentially a reflection of the land-standing association of seeresses and chairs (as in Strabo's Geographica from the first century CE, discussed above).[11]"

Yes this is from Wikipedia. That isn't my only source, but it is the most publicaly available one and the one that is double checked by the most amount of people who know about the subject. The source used in this section is also reliable - the Museum of Denmark.
