One of my favorite things is that I was able to start rural, as you didn't go crazy with highways as so many people do - you just kept the small roads.
Congrats!
It is propably because it takes some times for the cars to spawn in and drive all the way to the starting tile. After zoning some residential, industrial and commercial zoning and made sure everything is connected to water and power, i recommend putting the gamespeed on fast, until the cars start arriving to the starting tiles (might take 2 - 5 real life minutes). If nothing is showing up, you can check the "Traffic Routes" from the "Info Views" panel in the upper right coorner, via this tool you will be able to click on any road on the map, and check the traffic that will pass the given road in the near future. Use this tool on all incomming roads to the starting tile, if any coloured lines appear, vehicles will start appering soon.
If you have any modifications installed, i recommend trying to disabling them, to check if it works on the most basic game, only with Basegame, Mass Transit, Pines and Generic Tree pack.
