About Elder Scrolls: Legends

Created by Dire Wolf Digital, and published by Bethesda Softworks, Elder Scrolls: Legends is a small addition to the legendary Elder Scrolls series. This game was clearly heavily inspired by Blizzard's Hearthstone, an iconic card game known to millions of players worldwide. Elder Scrolls: Legends was first released for Microsoft Windows the 9th of March 2017, and was later released for iOS and macOS. An Android release is expected sometime in late 2017. Elder Scrolls: Legends was released for Steam 31 May, 2017.
How to play

Upon opening the game, you will be plunged right into a tutorial of 1 Act, containing 8 Chapters. In this tutorial you will learn all you need to know about the Basics. This guide is intended for those who need some additional information. But here are the basics:

In a standard match, your character has 30 Health, and so does your opponent. You will always start with 1 Magicka. Magicka is used to play cards, and will increase by 1 at the start of your turn. The game ends when one of the 2 players has his/her health reduced to 0, or when a player concedes.

Cards

On the image above, you'll see 3 different cards: Lucien Lachance (Creature), Odahviing (Creature) and Flame Tempest (Action). Other than the Creature and Action cards, the game also contains Support cards.

Creature Cards A Creature functions like a Minion does in Hearthstone. It is played in one of the lanes (more info below), and can attack enemy creatures or the enemy character.

Action Cards An Action card is a Non-Creature card, meaning it won't be played on the board. Action cards have different actions, e.g. Deal 3 Damage to a random enemy creature, Gain 5 Health, or Give a Creature (+4/+1). An Action card is the equivalent to a Spell card from Hearthstone.

Support cards Though Elder Scrolls: Legends is very similar to Hearthstone, Legends does not have any special Hero Powers. As a substitute for this, Legends introduced the Support Card: A card that once activated, cannot be removed by any enemy creature (unless that creature has a Summon:, Slay or Last Grasp: Destroy an Enemy Support. Support cards usually deal damage, heal or transform/improve creatures. The only ways to remove a Support card is with Summons, Slays, Last Grasps and Actions, or by using all it's Uses.
Power and Health/Defense

Take a look at the Odahviing card above. Look at the middle of the card. Now look to the sides. On the left side, you'll see a rhombus with the number 10 in it, and a sword through it. On the right side, you'll see a circle with the number 10 in it, and with a shield around it. The number on the left indicates the Power of Odahviing, and the number on the right indicates the Health/Defense (it's called both Health and Defense. In this guide we'll call it Health).

When a Creature attacks, the Power decides how much damage is dealt, and the Health decides how much damage can be received before the card is destroyed.
Rune Loss

On the very small picture with horrible resolution above, you'll see your character. Below the character drawing there is a number. This number indicates your character's Health. Around the character there are some small blue shapes. These are called Runes. Whenever you lose 5 Health, a Rune is destroyed. Upon destruction of a Rune, you will draw 1 card. If that card is a Prophecy card, you may play it for free immediately.

A Rune will be destroyed whenever you reach 25, 20, 15, 10 and 5 Health. So it is not possible to lose 5 Health, draw a card from Rune loss, then Heal your Character 5 Health, lose those 5 Health again, and take advantage of Rune loss again.
Keywords

We'll use the card Cicero the Betrayer as an example for explaining Keywords. As you can see on the card (shown above), Cicero the Betrayer has two Keywords written in Bold text: Lethal and Slay. Here's an explanation of what they do:

Lethal A card with Lethal will always kill a creature, regardless of how much Health/Defense it has. This means that a card with 1 Power and Lethal can kill a creature with 12 Health.

Slay If a card with Slay destroys an enemy Creature, a special action will be activated. In Cicero the Betrayer's case, it's Draw 2 Cards. Cicero can attack friendly creatures. So whenever your Cicero card attacks and destroys an enemy Creature, you'll draw 2 cards, and Cicero will be permanently able to attack friendly Creatures.

Summon A Summon card activates a special action immediately as the card is summoned/played. A Summon could for example be Gain +0/+4 and Guard if your max Magicka is 7 or more or Draw a random Atronach.

Guard Enemy Creatures must attack a creature with Guard before attacking any other Creature in that lane or your character. A Guard only affects the lane it's played in, not the other. Guard creatures ignore the effect of Shadow lanes. (a lot more info on lanes down below)

Last Grasp Once a Creature with Last Grasp dies, an action will be activated. For example, when a Last Grasp Creature dies, something like Summon a 5/3 Creature could happen. You could say that Last Grasp is the opposite of Summon.

Ward gives a Creature an "extra life". When a Creature with Ward is attacked, all damage is ignored; even if the attacker has Lethal. After a Ward Creature is attacked, the Ward is removed. The Creature with Ward still deals damage. If a Creature with Ward attacks another Creature with Ward, the Wards are simply removed.

Prophecy A card with Prophecy can be played for free (ignoring turns) whenever you draw it from Rune loss.
Lanes

Look at the picture of the board above. You'll see a blue line vertically crossing the board. This separates the two lanes on the board. In a standard Player vs Player match the left lane is a Field Lane, and the right Lane is a Shadow Lane. Creatures played in the Shadow Lane cannot be attacked by enemy Creatures until one round has passed. Nothing special happens to the creatures played in the Field Lane. There are many other Lanes, but I will not describe any of those in this guide. You can hover the mouse over the icon on the side of the lane to see what special there is about it. Other lanes can be seen in Solo Arena, Versus Arena, Story, Event and Expansion modes; read more about these modes further down the guide.
Main Menu Layout

Here's an explanation for what everything in the Main Menu means. I've put some numbers on a screenshot, and here's what you need to know.

1. Here you can Play against other Players. You can choose between Casual and Ranked Mode. It will also let you pick and change decks. Winning 3 matches will award you with a random amount of Gold (15, 25 or 35).

2. Here you can play the Main Story, or any other Expansion Story you've purchased.

3. In the Solo Arena you can enjoy all the features from the Versus Arena, just without all the actual people. You'll be shown a bunch of cards, and then you have to create a deck from those, and play against 8 bots to get to the final boss.

4. The Versus Arena is basically just the Solo Arena, but with people instead of bots.

5. In Practice mode you can try out a new deck versus a bot, or farm Soul Gems (more information about that below). After beating the Novice bot, you will unlock the Adept bot, and after beating that, you can play against the Expert bot. You will gain more Soul Gems from beating the Expert bot than you will from beating the Novice or Adept bots.

6. Event. Occasionally there will be special Events. Read more about these events on the Elder Scrolls Legends website.

7. Here you can check your level, stats and quests, as well as change the look and race of your character, and your displayed title.

8. Here you can access the Store, in which you can buy packs, expansions and special offers like the Starter Pack. Under the button to open the Store you can see the in-game Gold you currently have. Gold can be used to buy Packs, Expansions and a few Special Offers.

9. Here you can open packs containing cards. The (1) on the edge of the icon means there is one unopened pack.

10. Here you can edit your decks. There's more information about decks below.

11. Shortcut to your Special Offers, such as the Starter Pack.

12. Use the cog to change settings, find Support, or exit the game. While in-game you can also concede here.

13. This will show you the basics of the game, and let you contact Support.
Creating Decks

This is the Deck Creation screen. Let's do the thing with the numbers again.

1. Here you can change the name of your deck, as well as see which types of cards are used.

2. Here's a list of all the cards added, including the amount of duplicates (displayed on the right of the card name). Hover over a card to see details, and click on it to remove it from your deck.

3. Click a colored card to add it to your deck. A maximum of 3 duplicate cards can be added.

4. Here you can filter which types of cards you want to add. You can use 2 types in a deck, no more.

5. Use the Search bar to search for cards to add.

6. A gray card can not be added to your deck, either because you've already added all the available copies of it, or because you've added 3 duplicates.

7. The blue bars indicate the amount of cards in your deck with a cost of X amount of Magicka. The number right of the blue bars show how many cards you have in your deck. You must have a minimum of 50 cards in your deck, and a maximum of 70.

8. Here you can see which cards you don't have, and create them using Soul Gems. You can also remove cards from your inventory to get more Soul Gems.
Casual Match

If you're in the mood for a casual online game, it would be obvious to use Casual Mode. Here you're put up against a player whom you then have to beat, naturally. It's a standard play mode; you can use any deck with 50-70 cards, you start with 1 Magicka. The board is set up with a Field Lane on the left, and a Shadow Lane on the right. You can at any time Concede without consequences. By winning 3 matches, you will be awarded with 15, 25 or 35 Gold.
Ranked Match
SECTION IS BEING WORKED ON

This mode are for those who want a little something extra for winning. You start in Rank 12, and end with the Legend rank. You will not rank up with every win. Everytime you win a match, you gain a point, and when you have enough points, you'll rank up. You lose a point by losing a match.

When you lose the last point preventing you from going a Rank down, you'll be thrown into the special Serpent rank. In the Serpent rank you are forced to win 2 ranked matches to escape, and get to keep on playing.

By the end of a Season (1 month) you will be rewarded for the rank you are in when it ends. If you make it to Rank 1, when the Season ends, you will start in Rank 5 in the next Season. If you end in Rank 2, you'll start in the nearest milestone rank, which would either be Rank 5 or 9.

INFORMATION ABOUT BONUS ROUNDS WILL BE WRITTEN HERE SHORTLY
Expansions

The Dark Brotherhood Expansion introduced a new Story of 3 Acts, and more importantly a lot of new cards. All 3 acts are available for purchase using real money, and by purchasing it this way, you will also get an 'exclusive' mount for Elder Scrolls Online. If you'd rather not spend any real money on this, you can also buy each Act individually for 1000 Gold each.

The Heroes of Skyrim Expansion is set for launch on June 29, 2017.

This piece is taken from Bethesda's website: "Heroes of Skyrim reintroduces some of our favorite characters from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, including allies like Aela the Huntress, J’Zargo and Delphine, as well as some Dragons of legend like Alduin and Paarthurnax. The Dragons in Heroes of Skyrim appear across all attributes, and many will reward players for playing them with other Dragons. [...] One of the biggest new gameplay changes in Heroes of Skyrim is the introduction of a couple of new keywords, namely the Shouts. Much like in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Shouts have three different levels that increase in power. Where in Skyrim you would be able to “level up” a Shout by finding words of power, your Shouts in Legends power up the more you use them. The first time you play a Shout, you get its first level. The second time, you get the second level, and the third time… well, you get the picture."

This next piece is Bethesda's Steam Community announcement (Patch Notes 1.65): "Welcome, travelers, to the Throat of the World.

As civil war wages and a newly resurfaced threat descends from the skies, we are pleased to introduce our first expansion set, Heroes of Skyrim, featuring 154 new cards. Whether you choose to rebel alongside the Stormcloaks, unleash your Beast Form with the Companions, disappear into the libraries of the College of Winterhold, traverse the land learning powerful Shouts, or take advantage of the mayhem to find yourself some easy marks, we hope you will enjoy your time here being bathed in Dragon flames when the Heroes of Skyrim expansion set launches on June 29."

The Heroes of Skyrim expansion is the first expansion released after the Steam release. The expansion introduces hundreds of new cards, and lets you buy multiple Skyrim-themed decks for 500 gold each.

Enjoy the new menu, and start grinding gold for the exclusive decks! I know I sure will!

Twitch Drops

Shortly after the Steam release, Elder Scrolls: Legends announced Twitch Drops! A way to reward players who watch Twitch streamers play Elder Scrolls: Legends or other Bethesda games, such as Elder Scrolls: Online. So lean back, relax, and enjoy your free Legendary cards, card packs and gold flow in, as you watch your favorite Twitch streamer play your favorite card game!

It's common to get a drop every 24 hours, but a few community members have reported multiple drops within less than 30 minutes, indicating it might be completely random.

DISCLAIMER: YOUR TWITCH ACCOUNT MUST BE LINKED TO THE BETHESDA ACCOUNT YOU'RE USING TO PLAY ELDER SCROLLS: LEGENDS. THIS CAN BE DONE UNDER TWITCH ACCOUNT SETTINGS

Trading
The Elder Scrolls: Legends community moderator Scapes has recently created a Steam Sub-Forum called Trading. This might be a hint that heavily controlled and limited ES:L trading might be introduced at some point in the near future. This forum could also just be for trading the Steam Trading Cards from Elder Scrolls: Legends.

Bethesda has earlier discreetly said that trading is a possibility, but won't be something we'll see too soon. It's possible they might have changed their minds about that. No matter what, I sure am excited to hear more about this.
Bugs and fixes
A couple of bugs have been experienced. I've written some of the most noteworthy here:

1. Novice and Adept Practice bots are far too difficult to deal with.
Multiple users have reported, that when playing against Practice bots they lose continuously. It is not known if this is an actual bug, and many community members have their doubt, since only a few users experience this; like usually in online games. There is no known fix to this.

2. Game cannot start because of problems with files.
I've not heard much about this bug, but I have noticed that some users have created discussions in the Steam Community about it. If reinstalling the game, or validating the games files does not work, there is no way to solve this, other than writing to Bethesda Support.

3. Not enough cards to create a deck.
A few users have reported that they are not able to play against the final boss in Chapter 8 of the Main Story (the chapter ending the tutorial), since they don't have the 50 cards needed to create a deck. Some have said that none of the premade decks have worked. There is no known fix for this.

Conclusion
I hope this guide helped you getting started in Elder Scrolls: Legends, or at least answered some of your questions.

Please keep in mind that this guide is a work in progress; meaning that it will be updated as time passes. Upon new updates, I will update the guide as well. I'm sure there are some things I have not included, so if there's something you'd like to see in this guide, or if you've got a question, feel free to make a comment down below. And make sure to rate this guide up if you liked it!

DISCLAIMER: I am not an employee for Bethesda, Dire Wolf Digital or Steam. I am purely a community member.
Since I'm doing this as a hobby, I of course don't gain anything (other than publicity of course) from it. Therefore it would be much appreciated if you dropped me a donation in form of a marketable Steam item. Thank you!

This guide is actually discontinued - and has been so for about half a year - but I have started casually playing the game again while waiting for Fallout 76, so I might update it and add a bunch of new info soon.

You should be able to create a new Bethesda account and log in with that. If not, you can always use the Bethesda Launcher.

Hello to all. I would like to permanently delete the game with all the cards i have. Total uninstall. So in case the game is reinstall to be like a clear start . Is there a way to achieve this?
The Hawk  [autor] 23 kwietnia 2018 o 6:53
If you're running the game from Steam, try validating the game files (Right-click the game on the list in your library, go to Properties > Game Files > Verify Integrity of Cache/Game files). If that doesn't work, switch to the Bethesda.net launcher.

As long as your Twitch is linked with your ESL or Steam account, it should work on any platform.
