*Lemats taking out cannons are so quick you don’t have to micromanage so much because the cannons are destroyed quickly instead of a long melee battle. So fun!
This is the part two.
• Scouting: I love to see what’s coming and cavalry can quickly maneuver to do this.
• Rear Attacks: If you move the cavalry to the rear of the main battle, you must micromanage them, so they don’t get wiped out. However, they can pick up supply wagons and destroy rear canons. If this tactic is used successfully this greatly increases your chances of victory and less losses at the end of the battle. (Do watch out for enemy cavalry and size them up /If I see they are superior I usually back out quickly depending on the map)
Apparently there is a 1000 character limit for this post, so I will post a part two for Flanking.
Dunno why, but by default, your cav won't use their sidearms if you just right-click enemy units. You must manually do so.
How:
JUST BEFORE melee contact, press SPACEBAR (Halt), only THEN will your melee-cav use their deadly, fast-firing pistols. At any time, retreat them or finish the charge normally to avoid return fire.
Upsides:
1: Using melee-cav as if skirm-cav. (multi-role)
2: High firing rate lets you fire 2+ pistol volleys in enemy flanks before any return-fire.
3: Shortens melee time by lowering enemy morale-numbers before the melee.
4: No losses taken during firing, as opposed to melee. (free kills)
Downsides are
1: Very short range of the pistols.
2: Heavy micro-management required, but the pause/slowtime button is there to help with that.
YOU MUST learn how to use your melee cav's firearms to make full use of them. Pistols are a full half of the melee cav's weaponry! Use them!
There are some challenges to this approach, however. One is that the range on the pistols is very short, meaning that your cav will be very exposed and have little margin for error in this roleto say nothing of the fact that you often have to get so close that it doesnt take much for them to accidentally end up in melee, which is not great if the enemy infantry have managed to reload.
So while it is certainly very effective, it is often more practical to use melee cav in their melee role, as they tend to function more straightforwardly that way and require somewhat less oversight
