Naev is a game about space exploration, trade and combat. Players travel the galaxy and earn money by trading, fighting and performing missions.

Note: this game is free, open source software and can freely be obtained from SourceForge, but we think that Steam Greenlight would be an excellent way to reach out to new players who might otherwise never hear of this game.
Download the game here:

Main features:
  • A large galaxy with hundreds of planets and moons to explore.
  • Real-time, semi-Newtonian gameplay reminiscent of the Escape Velocity games.
  • Many different ships to buy and pilot, and many ways to customize each of them.
  • Multiple factions, each with unique ship designs and personalities.
  • Open-source, meaning ultimate freedom of modding.
Currently Naev is a playable game, but it is far from being a complete one. To further mature the game, we, the developers, need you. Yes, you. All it takes is the motivation to be creative in some way! Probably the easiest way to help, as well as one of the most valuable ones, is by coming up with new stories for the game, and by shaping those stories into playable missions. Other ways to help include making art or sounds, improving gameplay via balancing work, or (if you have the ability) even a bit of coding on the main program.

For those interested, we have a wiki (, a forum (, an IRC channel ( and a blarg ( Everyone is welcome to stop by and say hi!

A few things to keep in mind:
  • This game is a hobby project, not an indie development project. There is no final plan, no time frame for the "finished game".
  • The dev team does not accept monetary donations, only direct contributions to the game itself.
  • This game is compliant with the Debian Free Software Guidelines ( We ask that all contributions be licensed accordingly.
  • The game engine is written in C. Missions are written in Lua.
  • No, there is no multiplayer, and there probably won't be. Unless you add it!

That being said I still would like to play this game.

They made it free so they would not have to be bothered by people complaining that it isn't going fast enough. As stated in the comments above "it is a Hobby game not an Indie game", which means they will hardly work on it. If they were to recieve money for it, that would mean they would have to be dedicated to working on it. But since it is made free, they do not have to do what the public wants and will work on it when they feel like it.

Glad to see this greenlit. I've been wishing for a legit EV styled game, that has some more heart put into the game. Loved EV (played every version).

My only real concern is the game being free. Its been greenlit, but seems hard to believe steam would let this release it for free... then there is nothing to be gained by steam. I would gladly pay $10 for this... heck i paid 30 for every Nova game. I appreciate the heart behind freeware, especially with the width of contribution they've received, but I feel like contributers would rather see a good game successful released than see it die because they wanted to keep it free.

Free or pay, I will pick it up on steam simply to have it in my library. All the best!

You +1 Loyal Follower

*Space Pirates & Zombies = "meh". Evochron Merc, Spaceforce: Rogue Uni, Star Wolves 1-3, Zigfrak, Kinetic Void, Star Ruler, AI War Fleet Comm, and Armada 2526 (+whatever I forgot)
were all "almost there".

**Playing currently: Smugglers V, Space Rangers HD AWA, FTL, Distant Worlds, StarDrive, Endless Space, and yes, EVE-Online.
***Looking forward to games like: The Mandate, and Star Citizen

Multiplayer fans; check out Stellar Impact
It is a GREAT game, even with all its DotA-like-ness, but multiplayer only, and only lacking in people to play it last I checked.
NAEV comments:
I loved all the Escape Velocity games (have Nova installed currently and play it some still), and having played NAEV now, the controls, interface layout, gameplay etc all very similar and so easy to learn/jump right in! :).
The differences I've seen are all great ones!
