Compact extendable Lab build (All 7 Science packs)
By NickUlt and 1 collaborators
An all-science compact lab build that picks from 4 belts in the center for up to 8 possible items to pick from them. Coming from the requirement of up to 7 science packs beginning at the 0.15.x versions of Factorio and all the way to 1.0 or higher.
However, the Belt/inserter layout can also be used for other 3x3 buildings like assemblers for complex buildings that require multiple items!

Blueprint Usage
Compact and Extendable
The "compact"-ability comes from the fact that you can pack the belts with up to 8 items in the center, then use them from both sides symmetrically. The whole concept works because it is possible to stack 2 long arms and pick from both 2 blocks AND 3 blocks away.

The extendability of the blueprint is very important, and therefore the labs, belt and inserters are symetrical with only limitation being that you need to make 4 labs at a time, but you could easily cut down the last one if needed.

Vertical Extension
Thanks to the labs ability to share their science packs, the lab build can be extended vertically by simply putting more labs on top of the other labs and transfer the packs with inserters, making this blueprint fit better in various spaces of wherever your science packs end up in.

How we used it
Due to a height limitation in one of our plays, we have only extended it horizontally as shown in this screenshot
Height limited example
Alternatively, if you do have space on the other axis and prefer to do it this way you just need to pick the science from the existing labs as we have tried in this case:

Blueprint Book

You could call this the compact version of the compact labs solution if you like. Includes all blueprints that you may need to build this fast and a bonus one with assemblers instead

Entry Sample

This is really entirely up to you on how you insert them. The only thing you NEED to put is the underground entrances at the start of it. Heres a suggestion:

Don't forget to spice your build
We have not added endgame modules and beacons or even higher level belts on the blueprints as this design becomes useful as soon as you get your fifth science pack and no longer fit in two belts. You are encouraged to add to the design and play around with it as much as you please. If you have some interesting build do share with the rest of the community.Probably the most basic module setup
Credits
Special thanks to my good friend Kostas who came up with using stacked long inserters and made this layout possible. In addition i would also like to thank some more people who contributed to the final design as mentioned in the core blueprint, @Killcreek2 and @glukki

You're just wasting so much science ...
just put logichest and do a cool design like that :
B = Beacon (not bacon) with T3 speed modules
L= Lab (not lamb) with T3 productivity modules

BB BB
B B
L
B B
BB BB

You can reproduce the pattern and maximize beacon usage. It's +6700% speed for +20% productivity.
With 9 of them, it's pretty fast even for a 10k research.
Stryker Mar 18, 2019 @ 4:16pm
also it needs balance and setup for small verssion of electric poles
Stryker Mar 18, 2019 @ 4:14pm
this is actually a cool setup but this should be able to be setup like this as early as possible to lea to expansion/upgrade later can you do an example of early game
ConAnd81 Aug 16, 2018 @ 1:54am
Well, it's not a bad idea per se, it's beatifully executed, but it's unnecessarily complex for something that can be solved in an much easier way.
Emrule May 8, 2018 @ 10:01am
bad idea just get all the science labs insert into eachother from a corner
garywkerr Dec 1, 2017 @ 9:50am
This should be used as a template for the most useful way of presenting ideas. Explanation of the blueprint of the layout (with close up) is genius, the only way this could be improved is if you had a short video of operation.

Slightly enhanced version with bottom labs powered by small pole on the middle
