DarkRP Guide For New Players
Von ShiftyCollie
This is a guide to DarkRP and how to play it, aimed more towards the new populous of the DarkRP genre, but can be used by all! Inside is all the most helpful information to get any player on their way to reaching the 1% and the new teachers, passing on what they know.

If you have any information that you want to share that I may have missed or a method that would make the presentation better, comment below and I'll see about changing up the guide; as well as put you on the "Contributors" list!

NOTE: All servers are different so this guide will generalize common traits and rules that most servers will have.

What is DarkRP?
DarkRP is one of the most popular gamemodes on the well-known game known as Garry's Mod; a Half-Life 2 modification. It has you playing as different characters with a range of roles, and following rules that can change depending on which server you may join.

This quote below sums up most of what DarkRP is in very simplistic terms:
Ursprünglich geschrieben von Garry's Mod Wikia Page:
DarkRP is normally designed to mirror normal life, but is normally exaggerated with the simplicity.

Things To Know Beforehand!
Addons
Servers can have add-ons which can change some mechanics and add new features; I'd find out how to get to their Collection and download each one if you want to avoid any graphical errors and make as little LUA Errors.

Textures
Depending on the map (or add-ons), you will need to have certain games such as Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike: Source. You can also get Team Fortress 2 for some more textures but just those two should be fine. If there are any other textures that are missing, you may require another type of game.

There is a method other than buying Counter-Stike: Source which is to download textures from CS Cheater - The link gets removed so you'll have to google it. The site is free and completely harmless to your computer. I don't always recommend these things but I've added it if you want to do this method.
How To Play DarkRP
To first play DarkRP, you need to join a DarkRP server. I'd presume you're already on a server at this point in time if you're finding out how to play it, so I won't tell you how to join one - for now anyway.

Server Rules
When you connect to the server, you should read the rules that should be found by typing the command "!motd" into the chat or by pressing F4 and switching to the "Rules" tab. Each server's rules can vary, but usually, there are common rules such as "No Disrespect".

Getting Your Job
Once you've read the rules, you will want to choose a role other than a Citizen if you want to avoid being a hyper-intelligent dummy that cannot do much against others - You can do this by pressing F4, then go to the "Jobs" or "Roles" tab; all servers will have jobs such as a "Theif" or "Officer" that may have their own set of rules. You've got to keep in mind that most servers will withhold jobs to donators, set a limit or be unusable until you've reached a certain level.

You may or may not respawn when you've successfully changed your job and you can now play the game.

Building Your Base + Interactions
As you walk through the map, you will encounter many players, some will be friendly or aggressive, while others will be quite toxic and not play by the rules - For now, I will ignore toxic players until be get to "Reporting Players" down below. You can interact or avoid players at this stage, but you should attempt to find a building that is not in use so you can begin with building your base.

Once you have found your desired building, you may want to use the Text Screen Tool and have it display "building" - This is to ensure that nobody interacts with you on an RP basis such as raiding. You can use things such as fading doors to make it harder to gain access to your base.

Crinimal Acts
As a criminal job, you may be able to do a few things such as:
  • Raiding - This allows you to enter, kill and loot a building as long as there is no building sign.
  • Mugging - You can stop a player on the street and ask for a sum of money. If they do not drop the money in a certain amount of time, you can kill them.
  • Terror- As a terrorist job, you can either kill all players in an area or kill police with no administrative punishments for a certain amount of time.

Money Making
There are many ways to make money in DarkRP, and some are more efficient than others. Below is a list of ways to make money:
  • Mugging People - You can force people to drop money at gunpoint, if they refuse and surpass the time given, you can kill them.
  • Printing - You can use printers to print money for you over time. Servers can have many different printers and gadgets.
  • Meth Making - The most lengthy process out of all the options of making money. You need to follow each step of the way and then find a "Meth Addict" to sell it to.
  • Selling Weapons - This method can very greatly due to many different prices and you're dealing with other players, but this can be the most rewarding if you wait.
  • Begging As Homeless - If you cannot be arsed to work for your money, you can roam the streets and beg for people to give you their money. This can be successful at times, but you may get very little.
The Forums
Many DarkRP servers will have a website that will act as their home. Anyone can visit it and sign up, allowing them to post on all areas they have access to. This is very useful if you want to communicate to others without going on the server for a range of needs or requests.

Below, I will list and explain each area that most, if not all, forums will adapt to their personalized pages - All forums can be made different, however.

Official
Typically, most forums will list the important things under this such as their rules and information that should be read due to some level of importance. Occasionally, some communities like to categorize the section below within this.

Information / Announcements
Any important information or must see news are posted here. It may be best to read things posted on here just to be safe!

Community / General
This is the community area of the forums that allows you to talk about anything based around the community or play forum games.

DarkRP
DarkRP related threads are within this area. There may be "Suggestions" and "Staff Applications" depending on how the forums are set up.

Administration
This is usually here if there is just a single gamemode present within the community.
Under this area, there will be staff related threads such as "Staff Reports" and "Ban Appeals". You may be able to also apply for staff by looking for the thread known as "Staff Applications", this is usually the more active area within Administration of most forums.

Off Topic
Anything posted within here may not be related to either the community or the server(s).

Redirects / Links
Within this section, there will be links to other places such as GameTracker. Most of the redirects will important/useful for either you or the staff.

Other Headings That May Appear
  • Reports - A list of report related threads such as "Player Reports".
  • Support - Any threads related to getting help and/or support.
  • Discussions - Another title for Community that may include a few extra threads.
Definitions For Common Phrases
RDM / Attempted RDM / Mass RDM
RDM stands for Random Deathmatch. This occurs when you kill a player for an invalid or unknown reason. Before you shoot, it is better to warn people unless it's really needed. Attempted RDM is where you injure or try to kill a player, where Mass RDM is usually when you kill three or more people in rapid succession.

CDM / Attempted CDM / Mass CDM
CDM stands for Car Deathmatch - in simple terms, it is RDM but using a car. As with the previous, Attempted CDM is when you injure players and Mass CDM is when you kill three or more people in rapid succession.

NLR
NLR stands for New Life Rule. Going back to the area where you died within a short period of time leads to the breaking of NLR which is not allowed. You can also break NLR by using information that you only know because of your previous life (before you were killed).

Some servers allow you to return to your point of death or keep information with a rule breaking occurred such as RDM or Prop Kill.

Metagame
Metagaming is using information that would not normally be accessible to your character, such as learning someone's job from the tab menu or the words above their head, seeing "Hit Accepted" above a hitman's head and not letting him in [your building] because of that, or using some kind of source engine bug to your advantage (items that poke out through walls). It is also considered metagaming to use OOC chat in an RP situation.

Prop Kill / Prop Push / Prop Block
Prop Killing is when you kill someone with a prop where Prop Push is when you push people with your prop. Prop Block, as you might have gathered by now, is trapping people within props.

OOC
OOC stands for Out Of Charracter. This is a type of chat that players can use and it displays what you said to everyone in the game at the current time.
Basic Commands
There can be additional commands that I have not mentioned below, and they can be accessed by pressing F4 and by finding the "Commands" tab. This will list all commands that you may have general access to.

Out Of Character [OOC]
You can access by putting either // or /OOC in chat, divided with a space from the rest of your text. This will display your chat to everyone on the server rather than your general vicinity.

Actions
To do actions, you can do /me. This will be shown to the entire server, and it will be in a different color to normal text. It will always start with your character name, followed with whatever you typed after /me.

Change RP Name
To change your character's name, you can do /rpname, followed by the name you want to have (with a space in between). This is the name that everyone can see you as - You default name will be whatever your Steam name is.

Change Job Title
To change your job title, you can do /job and then the title you would like. This does not change your actual job, just the display name.

Demote A Player
There are times when players may not be doing their job correctly, so you can demote a player by doing /demote followed by their name and the reason. You will need a majority of votes to be in your favor for it to successfully happen.

Drop Money
Dropping money is something you will have to do when being mugged. To do this, you type /dropmoney, followed by the amount. The value is required to be higher than 1.

Adverts
People use adverts to advertise things or announce mugs, raids and so on (if their rules state that you need to). To advert something, you can do /advert followed by what you want to type.
Other Comments To Make
Serious Offenses
These can range from joking about DDoSing, threats to harm or really Doxxing a player. Many serious offenses can be deemed illegal in the UK or US, and the normal average player may not even know about these - It's best to report players if you see these actions as these things are not to be taken lightly.
Spoken Phrases
Within DarkRP, there are several words that can trigger a sound clip of a character saying a phrase or making a noise. By clicking on the guide below you will be able to see the full list of what causes phrases!
