Getting ready
Before we start you'll need to get a couple of things ready.

  • Your music files (obviously)
  • The Cities: Skylines game folder (if you don't know how to get there, don't panic.
I'll show you in a sec.)
  • An audio converter. In other words a tool that can convert your music files into the correct format for the game to be able to play them
Optional: How to open the game folder
This part is for those who can't find the game folder.

The shortest way would be right clicking the game inside your steam library and opening up the properties. There you should see a tab called local files (or similar) which should have the option of opening the games folder for you. Nice, right?

Another would be going into your Steam folder. And navigating through the folllowing folders:

SteamApps -> common -> Cities_Skylines

and there you are!
Converting your files
You will probably have your music files in a common format like .mp3, right?
Sadly, the game wants to play .ogg files. That means we need to make these .ogg files out of our .mp3 files.

For that, we'll need an audio converter.

I'd recommend using this one: http://www.freemake.com/free_audio_converter/
since it is freeware and won't cost you any of your hard earned cash.

Once you've got the programm installed and opened, just drag and drop your files in there.

Then you'll of course chose OGG as the desired format. When asked about quality, chosing optimum quality worked fine for me and saves you tinkering around with all those audio values.

Replacing the music
Now to the grand finale.

We need to throw out the ingame music and drop ours in there instead.

To set that up go into the game folder that you've hopefully opened at the beginning of the guide.
You did? Perfect. A+!

In it you'll need to navigate through the following:

Files -> Radio -> Music

Now comes the decision.
Since we'll replace the music of a radio station I'll leave the choice of which to replace up to you.
Remember that it'll still have the moderator of the channel so just pick the least annoying for your taste ;-)

So how do we replace the files?

By renaming your songs to the games songs.

Let's take an example for better understanding.

The song you want to get into the game is best_song_ever.ogg

You've chosen to replace the music in the GoldFM channel.

You put your song in there and need to replace one of the games songs.

The process should be:

  • Right click the song you wish to replace
  • Select rename
  • copy the song name
  • delete the song
  • rename your song to the one you deleted by pasting the copied name

You'll need to do this once for all the songs you want to get in there.
Done!
That's it.

Now you just go ingame, select the radio that you replaced the music of and enjoy your songs!

Cheers for reading!

I tried to use the suggested .ogg program above but it demands me to pay $20, solely to add a song over 3 minutes long. For a one use program, I'm not paying that much for it so is there any other suggestions or will this game be able to use MP3s as well?

That limits me to just a few songs. Why couldn't they have just mad a user folder for this. Come on CO.

Does this still work? Is CSL music mod better or this?
