Intro
Hey Terrarians! This is a simple guide on making automatic doors. A lot of y'all may already be doing this, but I've seen several YouTube videos of people making lifehacks for Terraria and the like, and I've not seen anyone mention this, and for me, this is essential to qualtity of life in Terraria, as it saves so much time having to constantly open and close doors every time you enter/leave a room. This can be done with any building you wish to add automatic doors to, as long as you have enough space in front/behind each door. It doesn't even matter how fast you run inside; you could dash at the door with any accessory and you'll get in just fine, with the door closed behind you. Without further ado, onto the guide!
Materials/Prerequisites
First off, you need to have the Mechanic available, as some of the materials needed will be purchased from her. All you need is:
  • Any color wrench
  • Wire cutter for any mistakes
  • Wire
  • 1 actuator per door
  • 2 pressure plates per door
  • Any hammer
Automatic Doors
To start, I've made a simple starter house:

You're going to want to add the 2 pressure plates at least one full block away from the door on either side to allow it to open:

Now just wire the door to the pressure plates:

And you've got simple automatic doors!

Mob-Proofing
With the above setup, any enemies that can break down doors can still get in your house. To solve this, all you need is a couple actuators and a hammer. First, place a block of whatever material you choose on the inside of each door:

Then hammer it down once. This make it smooth when walking over it, because even actuated, if it is full size there will be a slight bump.

Next, add the actuators and wire them up as well:

And now you've got mob-proof automatic doors! Note that while I stopped here to show the actuation and the door opening, adding this does not in any way affect how fast you can run through. As long as the block is hammered down, you can run through as fast as you like and it'll work just fine.
Conclusion
Well, there you have it. Exteremly simple, yet very effective. As I said in the intro, this for me just makes everything so much easier. Just be sure to use the pressure plates that only function when a player uses them, unless you want NPC's to constantly be triggering them.

As a side note, if you use these in a place where NPC's can walk, they won't be able to get outside with the block in front of the door, but it can happen that they may be following behind you and may open a door, which means that the next time you try to enter or leave, the actuator won't be synched with the pressure plates anymore. To fix this, all you need to do is just close the door manually (or open it) so that the door is open when the actuator is on, and closed when it's off. This doesn't happen very often, and isn't normally a problem.

I hope this helps y'all!

Adieu,
-Hego

@EpicFacePalm_ Like I've said before, using actuators on blocks works just fine, but every time the blocks are turned off, the building isn't an NPC house anymore, and could potentially make NPC's move out if left turned off too long.

why bother using doors;justuse some blocks and actuators and pressure plates that your player can only activate

@V endercreep V yes you can, but without doors or at least platforms on the floor or roof, the room will not count as NPC housing
