Intro (before the tutorial)
If you haven't play the tutorial, do that first. The rest of the guide assume you're at least played the tutorial.

The game will ask you to pick a faction after having played through the tutorial. Your choice of starting faction will only affect your starting gear, and you will ditch them for better gear pretty soon. You can use troops from any of the factions regardless of which you picked.
The currency

Copper is your main in-game currency. You use them to buy most stuff in the game, including replacement for casualty.

Gold is your premium currency. You buy them usually through real world money but a limited amount are also earnable through achievement. They are used mostly for cosmetic items and stuff like extra barracks.

prestige is your global experience. They can be used to unlock any unit and/or upgrades in the main unit tree. They are also used in addition with Copper to recruit adjutants (more on that later).

exploit is your duel currency. They are used to unlock gears separate from the unit tree. They are earned mostly through the dueling mode.
(in case you're wondering, the symbol for exploit is a wine cup)

To do list for new player
1) replace Bo Cai. While he's not a bad adjutant, he's more suited to ranged unit. Han Hao is a good beginner adjutant for the chinese and and the early signifier is good for the Roman unit.

2) turn on enemy indicator. this will show you the direction of enemy attack (and block) at close range (below ~2 meters).
Misc stuff to know
the '[' and ']' key are your cruise control (autorun). '[' will increase your speed and '] 'will decrease it usable on both horse and on foot.

(the pipe on the far left show your cruise setting. Here it's full gallop)

  • you will get a free horse at level 5.

  • 'Q' button is your guard break, and the specific animation depend on the weapon and shield equipped.

  • double tapping 's' on a horse will quickly stop your movement.

  • you can ping on the mini map by holding control key and clicking on the mini map
