Technical Details
  • The game runs internally at a resolution of 480 * 270 (16:9 ratio). This is scaled up pixel-perfect to whatever size you want, such as 4x native res for a 1920 * 1080 display. In addition, as a result of the strict scaling method I'm using, there will be zero resolution inconsistencies, especially with rotation. Crisp pixels or bust!
  • Gameplay runs at 60fps. Unfortunately, it is locked at 60fps because I was a scrub when I first started and didn't think about delta_time functions. Sorry to those with high refresh rate monitors, but it still runs fine on those too without issue.
  • Full gamepad support and remapping! Use whatever xinput or directinput compatible controllers you want, with analog/pressure sensitivity and rumble integration as well.

Release date: 2018

What is Super Pretentious Underground Dungeon?

Super Pretentious Underground Dungeon is a fantasy run-and-gun adventure. The game features five worlds, which you can move about freely in as you conquer the levels. As the Wizard, you have access to a wide arsenal of magical attacks and abilities. Explore towns, tackle huge bosses, replay old stages to find secrets, purchase new spells, and meet a wide cast of characters as you journey through a world on the brink of collapse.

What is the story of SPUD?

You are the Wizard, a former high-profile adventurer who has dropped out of the spotlight over the years. Your old friend and co-conspiritor, the Warlock, has just sent you an urgent letter begging you to come to his castle for shelter from an impending disaster. You decide to heed your friend's advice and begin the long journey, albeit with many questions. Will you be able to complete the long journey and uncover the world's dark secrets along the way?

SPUD is a character-driven story broken up into a chapter structure. Each chapter has its own self-contained plot and scenario while contributing to the greater whole.

Highlights include:
  • Going on a hiking trip
  • Working as security on a tea shipment
  • Competing in a fighting tournament
  • Breaking out of prison
  • Physically injuring weaker, inferior wizards

What is the gameplay like?

Before entering stages, the player selects their spells. You have two slots for your major spells, and an upgradeable amount of slots for your minor sub-weapon spells (initially two). In addition, you can also equip passive enhancement items (initially two) that can increase your abilities or grant new ones altogether.

The gameplay in SPUD is fast and ferocious, as the Wizard is in excellent physical condition and has years of battle experience.
  • Your agility is unparalleled. Dodge enemy attacks and spells with skillful ease. Navigate through massive levels demanding expert platforming skills.
  • While it doesn’t take much to bring you down, the same goes for your foes. Rip and tear through mobs of opponents like paper. Build the perfect loadout for every stage.
  • Dash around (and into) enemies, acting as a quick dodge or a shoulder bash. By unleashing your mana pool in a concentrated burst out of armor vents, the Wizard reaches greater speeds and heights.
  • Strafe around your enemies. You can keep the Wizard facing a certain direction independent of movement direction, allowing you to dodge attacks while making your own in return.
  • If a barrier blocks your path, search nearby for a magical key of the same color. Exploring the stages thoroughly can have other benefits as well...
After completing a stage, you can use the treasure you’ve collected to purchase items in any town you’ve gained access to. Expand your arsenal to become the ultimate magical powerhouse!

What is the soundtrack like?

The composition is inspired by video game musicians such as Tim Follin, Michiru Yamane, and David Wise. The instrumentation is inspired by old MIDI sound cards, fourth-generation gaming systems, and early sampling keyboards.

It's so rare to see such a combination of game design systems in one game, and it looks like they'd work well together! I'm really excited to get my hands on this!
