Outer Colony is a settlement building and society management RTS, with a focus on artificial intelligence and world simulation.

  • Single player mode and dedicated servers for multiplayer.
  • Inspired by software like SimEarth, Dwarf Fortress, and AI / simulation research projects in the defense industry.
  • Technical innovation is at the core of Outer Colony. From our custom, multi-threaded engine to the way we approach human behavior modeling, we want to provide players with an experience that's thought-provoking, novel, and fun.

Outer Colony is designed for unprecedented depth of gameplay. A few highlights are described here, but visit our website[] to learn more.

Outer Colony worlds are 3 dimensional spaces, and its structure building system facilitates a Minecraft or Dwarf Fortress-like mode of construction and world modification. {LINK REMOVED}

Outer Colony has a deep and engaging system for manufacturing items. {LINK REMOVED}

Digging for underground ores is the first step toward stockpiling valuable metals and metalloids. {LINK REMOVED}

Growing crops is essential for feeding your population. {LINK REMOVED}

From lighting rooms to treating drinking water, a colony's infrastructure is the key to keeping it ticking. {LINK REMOVED}

Establishing laws is one of the most important ways to directly govern the behavior of your colonists. However, some people will choose to break laws, and a prison system and police force are needed to give your ordinances teeth. {LINK REMOVED}

Barbrian attacks, rabid creatures, bounty hunters, and crazed robots are just a few of the perils your fledgling settlement will face, so your troops must be ready to meet these challenges. Read about {LINK REMOVED} and human combat systems here.[]

Creatures can be hunted, trapped, and trained for all sorts of purposes. {LINK REMOVED}

Outer Colony planets are designed to be rigorously modeled, virtual worlds. Explore the sections below to see what worlds are like and how they work.

Outer Colony worlds are fully 3D spaces, viewed from a top down perspective. {LINK REMOVED}

World generation employs algorithms that account for a variety of natural phenomena to produce interesting results. Orographic lift, hydrology, history, and other factors combine to yield dynamic worlds. {LINK REMOVED}

Everything's made from something in Outer Colony, from a rifle's stock to a human's hand, and the properties of their materials govern how they work. {LINK REMOVED}

Outer Colony uses a simple, pressure-based model for liquid physics. {LINK REMOVED}

Outer Colony features a custom, multi-threaded game engine, designed specifically to facilitate deeper simulation. {LINK REMOVED}

Outer Colony features over 60 different creature species, occupying different ecological niches and presenting a variety of opportunities and challenges. {LINK REMOVED}

In addition to world simulation, artificial intelligence constitutes a prime focus of Outer Colony. The goal is to build NPCs, especially human ones, that more closely approximate their real world counterparts.

Outer Colony's NPCs are governed by algorithms designed to make them more capable of adaptation than traditional approaches. {LINK REMOVED}

Each human has a unique personality, described in terms of numerous traits. Colonists' actions, aptitudes, experiences, and more are influenced by their personalities. {LINK REMOVED}

Colonists remember important things that happen to them. These experiences shape a person, influencing their mood in the short term and changing their thought patterns and perceptions in the long term. {LINK REMOVED}

Humans love to consume media, and creative types enjoy producing it. Controlling media allows you to influence your colony's local culture, yielding desired behaviors in your population. {LINK REMOVED}

Each human has a body that's made up of body parts, which can sustain individual wounds that impair specific functionality. {LINK REMOVED}

Humans form complex social networks, linking your entire colony together. A human's social links govern its leisure activities, its goal selection, its mood, its feelings, and much more. {LINK REMOVED}

Human intelligence doesn't operate in a vacuum in the real world, and neither does it in Outer Colony. Each colony also has its own local culture, and shaping the thought patterns of your colonists is essential for making them behave the way you want. {LINK REMOVED}

Among the emergent results of our system is a basic capacity to make moral judgments. This article and accompanying demonstration video describe how fear is modeled in Outer Colony, how our colonists use environmental awareness to project likely future states, and how they can make somewhat complex, ethical decisions in the face of extreme circumstances. {LINK REMOVED}

A great many external threats and challenges apply pressure to your colony. You'll have to fight to survive.

Bounty hunters from around the galaxy will target fugitives that take refuge in your colony.

If unchecked, rabid creatures can rampage through your colonists' ranks.

Foreign expeditions will establish nearby outposts, competing with your colony.

Mad scientists will visit your world, using your population for warped experiments.

Ships can crash on your world, carrying bounties or dangers.

Art Style
Outer Colony uses a representational style of pixel art, supplemented by detailed illustrations, to help players visualize worlds.

OST / Music
Outer Colony features an OST with ~1 hour of music, to immerse you in the vast, sci-fi worlds.

Thanks :) thats the 1 point that drove so many people away from dwarf fortress. :) That you choudn't realy control annything easely. So it's a real relife to see that you are aware of the problem and we get a good control menue so all the deapht of the game can be accesed easely. And you don't need a tutorial to control the control menue :)

@Harambe Thank you! I sent you a friend request to talk more, and if you'd like to join our forums, feel free to stop by and say hello here!

@Tusoalsob Thanks for the great suggestion! I'm working on a secondary military control scheme that's simplified and permits for groupings of arbitrary sets of personnel into ad-hoc configurations. I'm aiming to make it so you can select units by bindable numbers, to make everything as smooth as possible. Easing military command is something we're currently working on.

Well when you have realy mutch time :) Raid partys was the 1 thing dwarf fortress was missing.

So that you choud send out 10-15 warriors on a raid, then have them under a small controll sytem so you can attack other cittys and outposts, but all warrios that you loos are dead and you can only take back what you can carry.

It sometimes was a bit frustrating having a good Milatary but having to wait till something is happening and not been abel to retalitate. Even when the Raids whoud be hard and the AI Bases whoud have the same traps you had. So you choud loose you troops quikly just like an AI attacking.

@Tusoalsob Thank you for your support! Outer Colony is the sort of game where we hope we can continue to expand its feature set almost ad-infinitum. I'm always so interested in talking to players and finding out what sorts of things they'd like to see in the game!

So many of the coolest features to this point have been suggested by friends and testers, so if there's anything else you'd like to see in Outer Colony, feel free to suggest it here in the comments, or on the forums, here:

Thanks again!

Voyager Games  [author] Mar 6, 2017 @ 5:48am Thank you so much! I think @Honkytonk has done righteous work on the OST, too, and it's one of my favorite features. I even listen to it when I'm driving. :)
