Locating and navigating with longitude and latitude
The map feature in Osiris: New Dawn gives your position by longitude and latitude. When open, the map feature lets you left-click to get directional arrow prompts (with distance in meters) from the point you are standing to your spawning point, your inflatable dome, and any beacons you have set up. Unless the developers make a change, you can't access the map feature when you are in a ground vehicle.

You need to interpret longitude and lattitude coordinates and translate them into directions you need to travel to quickly reach other points (1) when you want to travel to somewhere other than your spawning point, your inflatable dome, or any beacons you have set up, (2) when you are in the cave (where you can't set up beacons), and (3) when you are in a moving ground vehicle and it is too dangerous to stop, get out and access the map feature.

Longitude and lattitude are old navigational aids developed to help sailing crews to determine their location and calculate their position relative to the location of their destination. On a globe of the world, or a flat map of the world, latitude lines measure position north or south relative to the equator, and longitude lines measure position east or west relative to Greenwich Meridian (aka Prime Meridian). Using longitude and latitude coordinates, you can determine your position on a globe or a map of the world.

To use longitude and latitude in Osiris: New Dawn, imagine the surface of the moon Proteus 2 on a flat square map:

Latitude: 0 degrees latitude is the middle line or equator (running east to west). Plus degrees latitude increase as you move north from the equator. Minus degrees lattitude increase as you move south from the equator.

Longitude: 0 degrees longitude is the center line (running north to south) of the map. Plus degrees longitude increase as you move east from the center line. Minus degrees longitude increase as you move west from the center line.

Using the Latitude 0 and Longitude 0 lines, you can visualize the Proteus 2 map as divided into 4 areas or quadrants:

Coordinates with Latitude plus and Longitude minus (Lat +, Long -) are in the Northwest Quadrant.

Coordinates with Latitude plus and Longitude plus (Lat +, Long +) are in the Northeast quadrant.

Coordinates with Latitude minus and Longitude minus (Lat -, Long -) are in the Southwest quadrant.

Coordinates with Latitude minus and Longitude plus (Lat -, Long +) are in the Southeast quadrant.

If you have trouble visualizing how latitude and longitude work (and you have the time, patience, and some graph paper), you can draw a map grid with the Latitude 0 and Longitude 0 lines drawn to mark off your 4 quadrants and then plot your position on the map grid. Having the map in front of you makes it easier to see whether you need to move N, S, E, W, NE, NW, SE, or SW relative to your position to reach a known resource location not marked with a beacon.
Geographical limits of moon Proteus 2
Exploring the terrain in a GAV, it seems that the territory on the moon Proteus 2 where you can find resources and encounter alien creatures is limited to the following approximate boundaries (the boundaries are irregular and not simple straight lines running east-west or north-south)

The northern edge of the relevant territory ends around Lattiude + 21.

The southern edge of the relevant territory ends around Latitude - 24

The western edge of the relevant territory ends around Longitude - 27.

The eastern edge of the relevant territory ends around Longitude + 21.

Beyond those points, it seems that the territory is barren and lacks any resources or creatures. Out of curiosiity, I drove the GAV straight north and found nothing but barren land from about Latitude +21 all the way to Latitude +90, where I stopped out of boredom and returned south. I did not repeat the recon going all the way south, east, or west.

Only the developers know whether they plan to include in the future more exploitable territory on Proteus 2 that goes beyond the current irregular borders.

For those reading this years later, the developers have added the feature to allow you to view the map while mounted in a vehicle. This is still great info to have, especially while in caves.

Oh. I thought you could get an actual map

To Goatfish: The Locator is the in-game map function. It is item 4 of your basic equipment. Select 4 and then right click to enlarge and center the Locator map. It takes some practice to get use to orienting yourself with the Locator since it gives you only a limited map of your particular location and shifts its perspective based on your personal orientation and movement.

i meant in game. i haven't seen anything available in my game. i don't know if its something i unlock with a perk or find one

To Goatfish: I haven't found a useable map online yet. I improvised using the in-game Map function and drawing a map grid on graph paper to mark off latitude and longitude lines and plot points of important locations. It's precomputer tech, but it works.

How do you get a map?

Hmm the funny thing is that there doesn't seem to be a hard limit set, say for example, the map doesn't feel confined into a box, except when you try to fly straight up and "bounce back" on the soft ceiling.
