What are source code changes?

Source code changes are modifications made to Subnautica during development. A change might...

  • Add a new feature
  • Improve or degrade performance
  • Change balance
  • Alter a gameplay system
  • Send the game crashing into the sun

... Or otherwise modify the way the game works. Hopefully for the better, but often for the worse, too.

Some changes are cut short - Where can I see full changes?

Twitter imposes a 140 char limit. So we can't always display the entire change description. You can see full change descriptions on our web site[subnautica.unknownworlds.com].
Playing with changes in game
Lots of individual changes accumulate to create an update. We release updates to Subnautica approximately every month or so. That means that generally, if you want to experience a particular change in game, you will need to wait until we release an update.

But wait, there is another way! We release "experimental" versions of Subnautica several times per day. These experimental versions contain the preceding hours worth of changes. You can play experimental Subnautica by selecting the "experimental" branch on Steam.

Warning

Experimental branch is extremely buggy, and regularly completely broken. For a more stable and fun experience, we recommend not switching to experimental branch.

How to switch to Experimental

Right-click on Subnautica in the Steam library, and select 'properties'. In the 'Betas' tab, select 'experimental' from the dropdown. After a few minutes, Steam should begin downloading an experimental version of Subnautica.

For more information about how to use experimental branch, see the Dev Updates & Progress guide:

Giving us feedback about changes
We want to hear what you think of our changes. You might notice that a particular change introduces a bug, or sends game balance out of whack. It is very useful for us to hear reports of such problems. Sometimes you might really like a change - In which case, hearing encouraging words is very motivational for us.

There are lots of ways to tell us what you think - In game, on social media, forums, and websites. Check out the Subnautica Development Feedback guide to see them all:

Keep up the good work. Over 400 hours played, on this account, another account, and the XBone version. So yeah, I love the game. And am waiting patiently for it to be finished.

And because I know you all need it, with alll the hard work- :espresso::espresso::espresso::2015cookie::espresso::espresso::espresso::2015cookie::espresso::espresso::espresso::2015cookie::espresso::espresso::espresso:
