Gothic I in 2022 [Fixes/Textures/DX11][EN/PL/Google Translate]

In March 2021 developers updated Gothic I with 1.08k_mod patch due to problems of game running on current systems. 1.08k_mod patch is based on community patch named SystemPack. Now game should work out of the box on current systems. Sometimes it doesn't. In that case you may install community patches, fixes etc. to fix your problems. And if you like you may visually enhance game by using high quality textures and DX11 support. You may also try mods created by community - those sometimes just add new items, rpg elements, different difficulty of enemies, new quest or even completely different stories. You may try all of that but I would recommend to play vanilla game first.

My guide was created in 2016 and it still is updated.

W marcu 2021 roku deweloperzy zaktualizowali Gothic I o łatkę 1.08k_mod z powodu problemów z działaniem gry na obecnych systemach. Patch 1.08k_mod jest oparty na społecznościowym patchu o nazwie SystemPack. Teraz gra powinna działać bez problemu na obecnych systemach. Czasami jednak tak się nie dzieje. W takim przypadku możesz zainstalować community patche, poprawki itp. aby rozwiązać swoje problemy. A jeśli chcesz, możesz ulepszyć grę wizualnie poprzez użycie wysokiej jakości tekstur i wsparcie DX11. Możesz również spróbować modów stworzonych przez społeczność - te czasami dodają nowe przedmioty, elementy rpg, inny stopień trudności wrogów, nowe zadania lub nawet zupełnie inne historie. • Please do not use this guide if you are going to blame author of this guide for wasting your so uhm.. precious time when something doesn't work. It's modding of old game, it may not work for you.
  
  
• As always when you are modding game it is wise to backup it's files before every operation on it's files.

EN: All screenshots in 2560x1440 resolution with max settings. Already installed community Union 1.0i. Game looks quite nice out of the box but a lot worse than a modded game with Artemiano or Carnage textures and DX11 renderer. Most striking are the low quality grass and water textures. In vanilla we also have to deal with a lot of objects popping up in the distance. The path from the barrier down towards the Old Camp is a perfect demonstration of this, as it provides a panoramic view of a considerable part of the Valley of Mines. Some objects, such as flowers, look really strange when you want to pick them up. These are downright neon bright.

PL: Wszystkie zrzuty ekranu w rozdzielczości 2560x1440 przy ustawieniach maksymalnych. Zainstalowany Community Union 1.0i. Gra wygląda całkiem ładnie zaraz po instalacji, ale dużo gorzej niż zmodowana gra z teksturami Artemiano lub Carnage i rendererem DX11. Najbardziej rzucają się w oczy niskiej jakości tekstury trawy i wody. W wanilii mamy też do czynienia z dużą ilością obiektów wyskakujących w oddali. Doskonałym przykładem jest ścieżka od bariery w dół w kierunku Starego Obozu, z której roztacza się panorama na znaczną część Doliny Kopalń. Niektóre obiekty, takie jak kwiaty, wyglądają naprawdę dziwnie, gdy chcesz je podnieść. Te są wręcz neonowo jaskrawe.

1. EN: Union - offline installer https://www.worldofgothic.de/dl/download_651.htm. Union (formerly known as Systempack) is highly recommended as it fixes several engine bugs.
Download and run the file, select the game folder and install it. For Steam default placement is: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Gothic. Windows may not recognize this file and warn that it may be suspicious - ignore it.

Community Tools/Patches - Gothic 1 Community Patch

3. EN: Gothic 1 Community Patch - https://github.com/AmProsius/gothic-1-community-patch/releases. The Gothic 1 Community Patch is - as the name suggests - an extensive patch for Gothic 1 made by the community. As it addresses bugs in the story and general script bugs, it is suitable for the main game, as well as any mod that modifies or extends the main game. The patch works for any localization of the game and is not language-dependent. Additionally, the patch can be activated or deactivated at any time as it does not alter savegames.
Download and run the file, select the game folder and install it. For Steam default placement is: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Gothic.

3. PL: Gothic 1 Community Patch - https://github.com/AmProsius/gothic-1-community-patch/releases. The Gothic 1 Community Patch to - jak sama nazwa wskazuje - obszerna łatka do Gothic 1 wykonana przez społeczność. Ponieważ odnosi się do błędów w fabule i ogólnych błędów skryptów, nadaje się do głównej gry, a także do wszelkich modyfikacji, które modyfikują lub rozszerzają główną grę. EN: This patch modifies the landscape in Gothic I and makes it more similar to the real nature. A more densely forested landscape with changed textures and new tree species (modified trees from Gothic II) are much more similar to real nature. Not only the textures of nature are new, but also other important and often seen textures such as armor, animals and wall textures. It works only with original not modded game.

PL: Ten patch modyfikuje krajobraz w grze Gothic I i czyni go bardziej podobnym do prawdziwej natury. Gęściej zalesiony krajobraz ze zmienionymi teksturami i nowymi gatunkami drzew (zmodyfikowane drzewa z Gothic II) są o wiele bardziej podobne do prawdziwej natury. Nowe są nie tylko tekstury przyrody, ale także inne ważne i często spotykane tekstury, takie jak zbroje, zwierzęta i tekstury ścian. Działa tylko z oryginalną, nie zmodowaną grą.

DirectX 11 & 4GB RAM Patch

EN: If You want to see game at its finest you may install DX11 Support. Of course your graphic card need to be DX11 compatible.

into the system folder of Gothic I installation. For Steam default placement is:

You may install more recent version than provided above but there is always risk that it will be not stable with other components I use in my guide as I always play Gothic to check it's stability before updating guide with new components. PL: Jeżeli chcesz grać w najlepszym możliwym wydaniu gry pod względem graficznym, powinieneś zainstalować wsparcie dla DX11. Oczywiście musisz posiadać kompatybilną z DX11 kartę graficzną.

Modifications - Introduction

EN: Gothic has very active modding community that has created numerous content mods with new or modified quests, items, abilities, npcs, factions, zones or even completely new stories. I would recommend, however, playing original game first and then try content mods. Those mods are sometimes tricky to install / prone to crash due compatibility issues with other mods or certain language versions. So, always backup your Gothic folder before installing those modifications.

You may find them on many websites including https://www.moddb.com/games/gothic/mods. I will try some of those mods and include in this guide.

PL: Gothic ma bardzo aktywną społeczność modderów, która stworzyła wiele modów zawartości z nowymi lub zmodyfikowanymi zadaniami, przedmiotami, umiejętnościami, npc, frakcjami, strefami, a nawet zupełnie nowymi historiami. Zalecałbym jednak najpierw zagrać w oryginalną grę, a dopiero potem wypróbować zawartość modów. Modifications - Gothic Definitive Edition

EN: Gothic: Definitive Edition is an unofficial expansion for the main game Gothic. The aim of the expansion is to give the main game the finishing touch and to expand it meaningfully without making any major changes to the actual game content. The nameless hero will still meet the same NPCs, travel to the same locations, and experience the same story as in the original game. The core features of the extension are bug fixing, balancing, and polishing.

Features:

• Extensive bug fixing in all areas of the game
  
• Improved & enhanced AI of monsters and NPCs
  
• Improved balancing in which the player's progression is spread over several chapters (hero does not get overpowered that quickly)
  
• Improved gameplay mechanics that also allow other classes than in the original game (dexterity of the hero gets added to the bow/crossbow damage, reduced casting time for spells; minimum damage as known form Gothic2 added; in the end, this allows to play as plain hunter or mage)
  
• Pickpocketing as in Gothic2

German version is still developed (currently v. 2.2.8), next is Polish translation of v. 1.5, and English one is sadly barebone 1.0 beta edition. Some people reported bugs in English edition and also questionable balancing. You also have to pay way more learning points for your attributes so you will run into problems in the late game if you also want learn other skills like skinning.

PL: Gothic: Definitive Edition to nieoficjalne rozszerzenie do głównej gry Gothic. Celem rozszerzenia jest nadanie głównej grze ostatecznego szlifu i znaczące jej rozbudowanie, bez wprowadzania większych zmian w samej zawartości gry. Bezimienny bohater nadal będzie spotykał te same postacie niezależne, podróżował do tych samych lokacji i przeżywał tę samą historię, co w oryginalnej grze. Głównymi cechami rozszerzenia są poprawki błędów, balansowanie i dopieszczanie.

• Thieving skills don't require any PA
  
• 10 levels of fighting with one- and two-handed weapons introduced. Levels don't only change the combat animation, but also the damage multiplier! A character who doesn't have the first learned level of a skill has a damage multiplier of 0.7 which means that he receives a 30% penalty to his damage. That is why at the beginning of the game the hero often does not break through armor. A character with 10 skill levels deals much more damage (multiplier close to 2) than a sword master in the basic game.

Update 1: Considering AMD GPU users with white screen after installing DX11 Support. As user mug stated: "Advice for people playing on laptops who have an AMD graphics card. Install DX11 from this link https://www.worldofgothic.de/download_591.htm (you should have a white screen now). Thats because the game is still working on your integrated gpu. To change to the dedicated graphics card go to your Radeon Settings now go to System>SwitchableGraphics. AMD made the whole app really confusing so now you have to click on running applications and change to installed profile application. Now a browse option should appear that lets you add gothic if it is not in there already. It started working for me only when I added all the .exe files from the system folder of the game."

Great guide! I linked yours in mine--hope you don't mind. Mine was just the basics for getting game up and running. At the additional modding point, I only covered 4 mods for bugfixing and redirected them to yours for further modding. I feel like your's is the most up to date and thorough. I'm actually following some of your recommendations going for the DX11 upgrade. You should list the Myrtana website--which has the Union mod along with a bunch of plug-ins. I know they're in Workshop but, I do not like installing things through there if I can manually do it.
