How to be a Literate Role Player ~ Version 1.5
By stardoopy
So you've gotten Wolfquest. That's a great start right there. but what if you want to play multiplayer?

A majority of the Multiplayer games a solely RP (RolePlay) otherwise its a gathering or a pup-raising challenge. In this guide, I'll explain how to be a "literate" Roleplayer and the Do/Don'ts of RolePlay.

*UPDATED 2020* Spelling/Capitalization fixed and minor additions.

Creating a wolf/charater
1.Creating a wolf
when creating a wolf, have fun with it! be sure to choose a name that isnt oversused or weak. Try to keep away from Warrior Cats names( unlss in a WC rp), these are wolves, not cats. (EX. instead of Snowball, try Frost) OC names are great too! Special characters such as accents and stars can make it difficult to write a characters name cross-platform, So perhaps try to use a name that can be written without special characters.

It's best to stay away from using ranks as your wolf's name (EX. naming yourself Alpha/Alphess) as very likely you wont recieve that rank.

There will be more customization options in wolfquest 3, so feel free to get creative with your looks!

Descriptions (Desc.)
2. Description.
Just about EVERY RP asks for a description, so here's a way to format them:

Use | , or / when describing, use M or F for genders, RIRP to show that you care about RP(but its not needed) , describe their characteristics and if you have room maybe how they look, also add age (dont say, Young Teen, try 3yrs, 1-2yrs)

When you describe, don't be edgy, don't make your character hate or love everything. Nobody is perfect, and your wolf should reflect that. Here's an example using one of my older wolves.

Pine/M/2yrs/Quick/energetic/peppy/loves rain/afraid of cougars/ tawny brown pelt/RIRP

*Do NOT put your "rank" in your desc. Ranked rps will give you a rank, dont choose one for yourself especially if you dont know what ranks are open.*

Characters can change as you get more comfortable, like how my wolf Fritz tends to change every few months or so, so don't be afraid to try out new things.

I also discovered a few months ago that RIRP actually means Rest in Role Play, but not in the same way as RIP. If you aren't too sure of what your character is like or it's too complicated for desc, then you put RIRP to let your colors show in rp, rather than defined in your desc. MIRP (More in RP) is also used.

[this part is mostly my opinion tbh]
Try to avoid long descs (takes up 4x the chat limit) and overly complicated words.
and please avoid putting species info (Unless you'r rping as a dog or animal that isn't a wolf) since this is confusing to other players and just wastes chat space. In addition, no one needs to know what your wolf's pelt looks like! you can cut it down to something simple (ex. Rust Pelt, Black w/ White mitts) Appearance isnt likely to come up with rp, and no one's going to care about the details of your wolf's coat.
Roleplay
3.ROLEPLAY
Here's where its most important (btw, some computers don't have these symbols, so I apologize in advance)

  • Use "quotations" to show what your wolf is saying (EX. "What? I don't remember seeing you before...")

  • Use (parentheses) for chat unrelated to the roleplay, for example (hold on BRB) or ((omg did you see that glitch))

  • You can use * - or ~ for actions (EX. *he wandered around the valley, searching for any scent of elk*) However, It's very common now that these are simply dropped, seeing as there's only a limited amount of characters in the chat. (I'd avoid using parentheses for this, seeing as it's easily confused with being out of rp.)

  • Use parentheses and the * for typos ( example, if you said delk, say *Elk))

  • Don't overuse caps, Caps are usually only for yelling and/or unrelated chat.

(Its honestly a lot easier to understand when you are speaking or doing an action by doing these, and this may help your rp run smoother)

~let's put all that together.~

*pine Padded out of his den, the winter air crisp against his fur*
*he turned his head to his mate next to him*
"hey, wake up. its drwn"
*dawn))
i can't type today ))
brb))

(Little tip! when someone returns from being "Brb or Afk" you and other wolves can say "Wb" or "webs" as a welcome back))

*personal pet peeve* Please try not to rp in the past tense, meaning using would or will for an action. (ex: He would stalk the elk)) its more of a bother to me, but plenty of other people aren't comfortable with it.

**Don't run up to other wolves to begin your rp, especially as a loner. Relying on other people to interact with you isn't roleplay, you'll need to rp by yourself alot in order to become more 'literate.

[more opinions]
Avoid making fancy barriers for out of rp text since it just waste space and is a bit harder to see.
(ex. |~| hello! |~|, ~|~ Hello ~|~) of course, you can still do this but it just seems unreasonable

Be careful using "literary words", I know other players and I have no idea what you're talking about when you use scientifically accurate words and such. Not all of us are in college!
Codes (optinonal)
Here are some chat codes you can use!

*PLEASE DO NOT ONLY TYPE IN COLORS DURING GAMEPLAY, IT TAKES TIME AND CAN GLITCH THE CHAT ASWELL*

The text colors I'm aware of so far:
*Red (Hard to see)
*orange
*yellow (somewhat hard to see)
*green
*blue (doesn't show well,so i'd avoid using blue)
*aqua
*pink
*black
(not sure of purple or brown, sorry)

Additionally, you can input the Hue code where it says [enter color], If your looking for a specific color. If you don't know what that is you can look it up.

to use colors, use this format

<color=[enter color]> [enter text] </color>

EXAMPLE

<color=aqua> Hey guys!)) </color>

coloring is good for RP-lines and for emotion (using black or red to show anger is the most common)

others:
<b> this is the code for bold </b>

<i> this is the code for italics</i>

Bold is good for a joke or for showing strong emotions, like anger.
I use italics for inner thoughts. Please don't rp completely in Italics

Another one is Size. This feature had been removed due to abuse of it in the chat, but it's still accessible. EX:
<Size=20> you can change the number to change the size </Size>
The S MUST be capitalized in both parts for this to work
The WQ chat is about a size 15 so
Small text use: 5-15
Large Text: 20-30
You can get larger but it should be avoided unless for a joke.
((2020 edit: Im currently unsure if the text size feature is still available in this way))

End
That's about all I have for you!
If you have any suggestions or updates you'd like to make aware to me, just comment it!

As of 2020, this guide is 4 years old and was last updated in 2018. Not everything I've suggested may be current for the wolfquest community now, so I am open to making any changes.

Yes, purple and brown do exist, at least back when I played 2.7, as I distinctly remember using them. Also one time I used chat size 999999, was fun, crashed, rehosted, all was well
The pet peeves were hilarious as well because of how overly relatable they are, seriously xD

I don't mean to nit pick, this is a very good guide, but you misspelled a lot of things in general in the index. Yet you are trying to teach people how to rp literately. Just a heads up, you may want to fix it to avoid giving off the wrong idea. :)

Hah, my oldest rp wolf is named Pine. I always slowly increase my wolves age if I'm using them for rp and keep track. In 2015 when 2.7 came out my wolf Pine was about 2. It's about 3 years since then, making him 5 years. I do descriptions like this where since folks can see my name in chat, I add everything after the name.
Pine: M/5 years/amber eyes/red-brown fur/scar ridden pelt/sarcastic/clever/rude at times/experienced hunter/submissive in fights/ect in rp

If to compare him to a popular Warrior Cat, he'd kinda be sarcastically mean like Jayfeather is to his apprentice, but less seriousness in his tone for my wolf.

I stopped adding history description to my wolves without a impressionable one, also saving me extra things to type.
