Introduction
This is a simple, easy-to-follow, spoiler-free guide, designed to give you a solid playthrough that will give some nice achievements, or set up a solid character to enter Guns of Infinity with. Additionally if you'd prefer to just read the game like a book, this guide should help you to have a well-rounded playthrough with a cohesive character and story.

Please note that the choices must, almost without exception, be taken as they're listed here - deviating from the path I've provided will usually mess something up further down the line as there's plenty of hidden stat gains / minuses / checks. I've done my best to note where you can [Choose Any] option, or ask [Optional Questions], though, so you have a bit of flexibility.

The first playthrough is the 'best', titled 'National Hero' - our character will be heroic, valiant and intelligent. We'll end the story with a strong save complete with medals, friends and wealth, ready for a great beginning to Guns of Infinity. Includes seven achievements:

  • Decorated
  • Heaven Knows, Earth Knows. You Know, I Know.
  • A Cunning Plan
  • Compleat Soldier
  • Hold the Line
  • Knight of the Red
  • National Hero

The second playthrough is the 'worst', titled 'Proper Gentleman' - our character will generally be afraid of combat, a poor leader of men and an all-round waste of a good uniform, although his heart is in the right place. In this run we can end the game in two ways - with suicide, for one achievement, or without suicide, for a different achievement. To unlock them both, you must replay this whole playthrough and choose the alternate ending. Includes five new achievements (plus one already unlocked in the 'National Hero' playthrough, "Decorated"):

  • No Doubts Or Fears
  • Red Martyr
  • Oops, Sorry Sir!
  • Shred of Honour
  • No Cause Worth Killing For

The third and final playthrough, titled 'Dog of War', is a solid balance - our character is talented and strong, but not overly heroic or naive. It bears similarity to the first run, but our character is much more vicious and warlike. This will unlock the final four achievements:

  • Rose, Harbour, Dragon, Tower, Wolf
  • For Ruin and the World's Ending
  • An Old, Bold Soldier
  • Exitus Acta Probat

And five already unlocked in the 'National Hero' playthrough:

  • Decorated
  • A Cunning Plan
  • Compleat Soldier
  • Knight of the Red
  • National Hero

Credit to Choice of Games forum[forum.choiceofgames.com] experts for creating the original 'National Hero' guide which the first playthrough is based off. I've tidied it up and made it easier to understand and follow, plus written the other playthroughs myself. Any suggestions or problems, please leave a comment!

"Tierra and Victory! Advance!"
National Hero - Act 1

Observe the men training outside. I might be able to pick up some pointers.

Try to offer some excuse explaining my lateness.

This regimen is impossible! I am barely surviving!

I have already become friends with many of my fellow officers.

[Choose Any]

Practice sparring and marksmanship with Cazarosta.

Stay behind: I must to try to help Elson.

Chapter II

I brush up on my knowledge of the League of Antar.

Take command! We should not leave the conduct of the battle to a mere sergeant!

I hold up the boarding party and try to figure out what it is.

Be cautious: We can hold midships and force the Antari to come to us.

[Achievement: Decorated]

Chapter III

Of course. I would not turn down a chance at leisure before I receive my orders.

Play Tassenswerd.

I select a sergeant and assemble my unit first.

Decide that none of these men will do. Lanzerel is still unassigned, might I request him instead?

Buy a horse from a merchant with my own funds.

Buy Thunderer.
National Hero - Act 2
Chapter IV

Drill my men relentlessly.

A chance for a glorious victory.

Damn the horses! Ride at full speed!

[Optional] Ask my sergeant for advice.

Try a more efficient pattern, and pocket the remaining seals to sell later.

Cut firing loops.

Care for the horses.

Block the road.

"Mount up! We're going to charge the enemy!"

Generously: I split the money between my men, leaving none for myself.

Maybe the Gazette ran out of space to print whatever Elson had done to deserve his promotion?

Request cavalry reserve duty.

Chapter V

[Optional Questions]

"No questions sir."

Extra shot and powder, for a protracted fight.

To be prepared for anything.

That this moron will shortly get all of his men killed. He must be dealt with.

"Lieutenant Carrecort, you are a disgrace to His Majesty's Army. Since you seem so uneager to save your men, I shall have to do it for you. I am assuming command."

I am a better leader.

Try a frontal assault.

Lieutenant Carrecort clearly has much to learn about the art of command, censure him.

Keep the weapon for myself.

Return to patrol duty.

Chapter VI

I pick the Western route. More arduous duty will keep the men in fighting trim.

Approach them: Ask what they are talking about.

Try to convince them.

Try to convince Lefebvre give me more answers.

Tell them that I am under Lefebvre's orders to offer them assistance.

Find the others.

Escort them back as guests.

Tell Major Hunter.

[Achievement: Heaven Knows, Earth Knows. You Know, I Know.]

Chapter VII

I feel very confident! I am sure I will get a new command soon!

Remain at the Duke's Service to ingratiate myself.

Ask the Duke if I could read his books.

I pick the men from my old patrol.

[Optional] "Staff Sergeant Lanzerel, what's your advice?"

The men need discipline above all else. I drill them until they faint!

If the army refuses to house my men properly, I shall have to rent better for them myself.

Have him pay recompense; six months' wages should do it.

"My men stand as ready as they'll ever be. They won't disappoint you."
National Hero - Act 3
Chapter VIII

[Choose Any]

[Choose Any]

I haven't decided quite yet.

Eat with Cazarosta.

I stick to small talk.

Actually, I've got a plan of my own I'd rather we use.

My brilliant plan will assure us a glorious victory!

Chapter IX

I would have Cazarosta do it.

"I think you should do it sir."

[Achievement: A Cunning Plan]

Take the Antari commander captive for ransom. Allow the rest to leave.

Chapter X

[Achievement: Compleat Solider]

I reassure Elson that our recent victory will make our uniforms recognizable enough.

[Optional Questions]

I excuse myself and retire to my room to prepare for the reception.

Take a look.

If only we allowed our women to fight alongside us! Not only would it allow us to replace lost soldiers faster, but it would allow Tierra to field a larger army.

Name, rank, regiment, titles, decorations: everything. I want to make as big an impression as possible.

[Choose Any]

Listen to the Duke of Wolfram's conversations with his senior staff.

Speak with the Takaran envoys.

[Optional Questions]

I take my leave.

Chapter XI

"Absolutely sir, I am confident in our chances of victory."

I actually am confident in our victory.

Find Cazarosta.

Spend some time with Elson.

I spend the evening with my men.

Remind Elson how vital our regiment's task is likely to be.

Elson is right, if we win against Hussars, our glorious deeds will stand forever!

[Choose Any]

[Choose Any]

"What shall be our next move?"

Volunteer to guard the castle with Cazarosta. My skills are of more use here than in the field.

I try to convince him of the tactical merit of allowing me to retain command of my men.

"Withdraw from the field? What manner of cowardice is this?"

"What about the rest of the Regiment?"

"Very well, we will stand and hold this position then."

[Choose Any]

"Surely I shall. Tell us the truth."

Wittelbrook is a lost cause, I speak to his men instead.

Block the passage between the two castle towers with my men alone.

I should find a way to make my defensive position more formidable. A barricade, perhaps.

I'll set up my barricades in a way which will do the most damage to the Antari.

I cannot leave, but I can allow my men to. I shall let every one not willing to fight to the death escape with their lives.

Be clever: Find a way to unhorse the Hussar and gut him before he can recover.

[Achievement: Hold the Line]

Epilogue

You may now make a savefile in order to continue this save in Guns of Infinity!

Ride ahead: I must try to get Cazarosta to stop the exercise.

Chapter II

Try to socialize with the common sailors.

Join the boarding party. I will show them the stuff that Royal Dragoons are made out of!

Chapter III

Ignore them and explore the town yourself instead.

Be fair: 15 crowns should be enough to feed and clothe them over the winter.

"Of course!"

[Choose Any]

Inconceivable! This war should be conducted as a noble enterprise, not a massacre!

I select a sergeant and assemble my unit first.

Decide that none of these men will do. Lanzerel is still unassigned, might I request him instead?

Requisition a horse from the official stables.

[Choose Horse Name]
Proper Gentleman - Act 2
Chapter IV

Drill my men relentlessly.

Utter foolishness. This reckless act will get us all killed.

Pick up the pace a bit. We cannot afford to dawdle.

[Optional] Ask my sergeant for advice.

Set the seals exactly as the diagram says. Hopefully, Captain Hunter knows what he is doing.

Cut firing loops.

Care for the horses.

"Mount up! We're going to charge the enemy!"

Keep all the money: I was the one that did all the hard work and an officer's lifestyle requires a greater supply of funds than that of an enlisted man.

[Achievement: Decorated]

He clearly used his noble birth to secure an undeserved promotion.

Request cavalry reserve duty.

Chapter V

[Optional Questions]

"No questions sir."

Hand Grenades, to clear out any stubborn rear guard.

To be prepared for anything.

That this moron will shortly get all of his men killed. He must be dealt with.

I am a better leader.

Stage a diversion.

[Achievement: No Doubts Or Fears]

Carrecort made a single bad decision; that doesn't make him incompetent.

Return to patrol duty.

Chapter VI

I pick the Western route. More arduous duty will keep the men in fighting trim.

Eavesdrop: My men should keep no secrets from me.

[Alternate] Approach them: Ask what they are talking about.

Threaten them.

Accept my assignment at face value.

Follow my orders. Render whatever assistance I can and escort these men back to the outpost.

[Alternate] Search for the other missing Grenadiers myself.

Seek promotion to lieutenant.

Chapter VII

Do away with the thing! I will not permit myself to fall prey to sentiment!

Requesting a promotion was a mistake, I would much prefer to be back at the outpost with my men.

Gamble and socialize at the Officers' Club.

Play casually.

I pick the most popular men.

[Optional] "Staff Sergeant Lanzerel, what's your advice?"

The men need discipline above all else. I drill them until they faint!

These are the lodgings provided, my men shall have to bear with it.

"My men stand as ready as they'll ever be. They won't disappoint you."
Proper Gentleman - Act 3
Chapter VIII

It might be dangerous, keep an eye out.

[Optional] "Staff Sergeant, what's your opinion?"

"Take this man outside of the camp, slit his throat."

[Choose Any]

[Choose Any]

Captain Elson's plan.

It would be more merciful to allow our enemies to flee.

I eat with my men.

Cazarosta's plan is better.

Perhaps my sergeant is right. I should keep an eye on Cazarosta.

Chapter IX

Say nothing.

[Optional] Ask my staff sergeant for advice.

Order the men into tighter Extended Line.

…But my fellow Dragoons or I might not survive to see victory anyways.

Reassure Elson that Cazarosta will find a way to complete his objective.

"Continue as planned. Give fire on my command."

Chapter X

I reassure Elson that our recent victory will make our uniforms recognizable enough.

[Optional Questions]

I excuse myself and retire to my room to prepare for the reception.

Take a look.

A frightening notion actually: if the Takarans are unprincipled enough to expose their women to battle, who knows what they might be capable of?

Name, rank, regiment, titles, decorations: everything. I want to make as big an impression as possible.

[Choose Any]

Speak with the Takaran envoys.

[Optional Questions]

I take my leave.

Speak with Cazarosta.

"No, I shall insist on speaking with him: Cazarosta is my friend and it would be rude not to."

Ask why Cazarosta is not taking part in the proceedings.

Ask why Cazarosta joined the army in the first place.

Chapter XI

I spend the evening with my men.

I remind Elson that having to face several thousand elite heavy cavalry is no cause for rejoicing.

[Choose Any]

[Choose Any]

"How can we survive this?"

Hide in a castle while the rest of the regiment fights for glory? Not a chance!

I try to convince Lanzerel to speak with the men on my behalf.

I give the less certain of my men the opportunity to withdraw from this battle.

[Achievement: Red Martyr]

Restore my last checkpoint.

Hide in a castle while the rest of the regiment fights for glory? Not a chance!

I try to convince Lanzerel to speak with the men on my behalf.

I rally the men with a speech.

Rush the enemy before more of them try to attack me. I'll use my speed and my sabre to my advantage.

This battle is lost; all we can do is put as much distance between us and the Antari as possible.

[Achievement: Oops, Sorry Sir!]

Restore my last checkpoint.

"I cannot say I have confidence that we shall come out of this victorious."

[Optional] Find Cazarosta.

I spend the evening with my men.

I remind Elson that having to face several thousand elite heavy cavalry is no cause for rejoicing.

[Choose Any]

[Choose Any]

"How can we survive this?"

I volunteer to stay in the castle, but only to give myself a chance to escape this certain defeat.

Yes, better to live on disgraced or as a prisoner of one's own army than die in pointless glory trying to stave off certain defeat.

[Alternate] Yes, I must escape. Once my men find out that I must lead them into a hopeless battle, they'll kill me and desert anyways.

Epilogue

For achievement 'Shred of Honour', we take the suicide path. Choose either of these three options:

My family.

The men I have left behind.

My fellow officers.

Then choose:

Putting the pistol to my head, and pulling the trigger.

[Achievement: Shred of Honour]

Alternatively, for achievement 'No Cause Worth Killing For', we must stay alive. This will also let us continue this save in Guns of Infinity as a disgraced officer! Choose this option:

My country.

Done;) "Tierra and Victory!"

In closing, I hope this guide has been helpful for you, whether for seeking achievements, setting up a solid character for Guns of Infinity, or simply to enjoy the game like a book. It, and its sequel, are excellent tales and hopefully this has only served to increase your enjoyment of them. The Infinite Sea series is off to a great start with these two books and looks set to be a fascinating and unique set of stories.

Any suggestions, problems or comments, please don't hesitate to leave it below. Thanks and good luck in Guns of Infinity.

Thank you for your help in finishing the achievements, after a few years it is now finished.

Hello! 75% is the default value for all MCs, unless you start as a West Coaster (they get +10).

From memory the -10% drop is due to the charge across the bridge early on to assist with Hunter's ambush, specifically because our soldiering skill isn't quite high enough to control Thunderer properly.

This should generally be a non-issue due to the Forlorn Hope in Guns of Infinity, after which health is reset to some default values depending on how injured you are. Let me know if you have any further or followup questions.

For the National Hero route, is the final health 65%? And why do we only start at 75% health?

I unlocked all achievements while following your guide and they unlocked whenever you mentioned they would. The guide is precise.

I can give the following advice to the people, who have trouble unlocking this: Navigate to the save game files and delete the persistent files, then try again.

I can confirm I'm still receiving the No Cause Worth Killing For achievement as expected, playing the "Proper Gentleman" path to completion with the non-suicide ending. If anyone could provide further info it'd be greatly appreciated - everything is working as expected here.

I have the same problem as Nathion. The achievement No Cause Worth Killing For won't trigger for me.

You're most welcome!

@Nathion: Just replayed Sabres with the latest version, following the 'Proper Gentleman' guide, and received the achievement 'No Cause Worth Killing For' as expected. No problems here.

Splendid. Thank you for this.

yes, I'm certain I did not commit suicide at the end of the run and still did not get the achievement.
