Adding gamepad / controller support using AntiMicro (a free, open-source program)
Von Hodinson
AntiMicro is a program that converts gamepad inputs to keyboard and/or mouse inputs.

It also has auto-start and auto-profile features, so once set up, it can be forgotten.

Check the Wiki for more: https://github.com/AntiMicro/antimicro/wiki

Included in this guide is a profile for Xbox 360 controller based on Call of Duty Black Ops 2 default controller layout (button layout picture is from the game).

1: Download and install AntiMicro
Go to https://github.com/AntiMicro/antimicro/releases and download the latest version of the program.

(the .msi version comes with an installer, the .zip without)

Unpack or install.
2: Start Antimicro
AntiMicro must be run as administrator.

This is done by:

1. Right-clicking the antimicro.exe file and choosing the option in the drop-down list that appears

..or it can set to always run as administrator by:

2. Right-clicking the antimicro.exe file and in the drop-down list that appears, choose properties. In the next box, select the compatibility tab, then check the box next to the run as administrator option there.

(if you forget to run as administrator, AntiMicro will conveniently display a button at the bottom of the window reminding you. Click it and the program will re-launch in administrator mode)

NOTE:
If AntiMicro will not auto-start in Windows 10 when the antimicro.exe is set to run in administrator mode like described above, it's blocked by Windows, so you need to make a .bat file and set that to auto-start Antimicro instead.

To make such a .bat file, just create a new text file (right-click -> new in popup menu) in the Windows Startup folder (C:\Users\MyUserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\), name it antimicro.bat, then open it up in a text editor like Notepad (right-click -> Edit), and write a start command there, like this: start "C:\Program Files (x86)\AntiMicro\antimicro.exe" (you may have a different path).
3: Set up or load an AntiMicro profile for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3
You can easily set up your own button and controls configuration in AntiMicro, but here is anyway a ready made profile based on Call of Duty Black Ops 2 native controller default button layout: https://app.box.com/s/w4ycq4cyskr7vwxmwdps65y4qo0cl37c
(use right trigger button (RT) in game menus)

AntiMicro profiles can be saved and loaded anywhere on your hard drive, but for safekeeping you may want to create a 'profiles' folder wherever AntiMicro is installed and save the profile there. In any case, once you've loaded it up once, it will appear in your recent profiles list at the top-left corner of the AntiMicro window for easy access in the future.

You can also have AntiMicro load the profile automatically every time the game is started by connecting the profile to the game here: Options -> Settings -> Auto Profile.
See the Wiki for more: https://github.com/AntiMicro/antimicro/wiki/Automatically-Loading-Profiles
4: Start the game!

does this allow you to change sensitivity? Only issue I'm having currently. Don't mind mouse and keyboard but enjoyed playing the survival mode on console so got used a controller

Hi Patches, it's indeed funny if people think using a controller gives an advantage, especially here where there is not even aiming assist like some games will give to their controller support. In reality you have no chance against mouse and keyboard users. Still would like to see confirmation that this will cause a VAC ban though..

I thought I read that trying to add controller support to MW2 and MW3 would result in a VAC ban, which sucks cause I love to use my controller. Funny enough they said it was because it would give people with controllers "an unfair advantage" if I'm not mistaken.

Hi Resentment, I see your points but the included layout is based on COD's own gamepad configuration from Black Ops 2 where B cycles between crouch and prone, and to stand up, it's A. (it doesn't show in the config picture unfortunately).

About X, picking up items and reloading with the same button will always be a compromise, but sometimes you are behind cover and just want to reload without picking up whatever is there, so therefore it's set to tap for one, and hold for the other.

But with AntiMicro you can of course anyway change the buttons or their behaviour to something else if you prefer, that's the beauty of it. Toggling or holding ADS can also be set to your preference. You can even make custom combinations, where it normally holds, but where for example a combination of A+LT makes it toggle. (just ask if you need help with this, but it's explained in the AntiMicro Wiki)

(sorry for the late reply)

This is a very helpful guide. I personally f@#!ng suck at Keyboard and the only way to do that is to have this one. I have FANTECH GP11 Controller and it work flawlessly. However, I find it very annoying that PRONE has become a goddamn issue. For example, you have to press B twice to PRONE/GET UP instead of like the old console, which you just press HOLD B. Also, weapon pick up doesn't use HOLD X, just Tap X and you already picked that up. Grenades and other stuff works fine, but ADS doesn't have a Soft-Lock like on the console.

Nevertheless, I find this guide to be very helpful.

I have now changed the ready made AntiMicro profile to one based on Call of Duty's own controller button layout (from Black Ops 2).

This will help games play more consistent, and be about the same as consoles (Playstation etc)

"Maybe do you know where can I find the same configuration like in the ps3."

Sorry for the late reply!

See if there are any in the AntiMicro profiles page here: https://github.com/AntiMicro/antimicro-profiles .

Thank you very much! It worked perfect! But the only problem is that I am used to the play station 3, and you configuration is different. Maybe do you know where can I find the same configuration like in the ps3. Thank you again!
