Farming!
By SleepySarahn
Let's face it, it may be possible to make it through the game without buffs and what not, but It wouldn't hurt to have a farm for making potions for your convenience. It may be time consuming, and you say you got a big adventure at hand, but it wouldn't hurt to have a short break to cultivate an easier path to success! Here, I'll tell you how to get started from early beginnings, to end game fanatics.

Basic Farming Facts
As you know, all around your world, plants are growing. The small plants, used in alchemy, are small, and take a bit to spot out. The plants are:
Daybloom
Blinkroot
Moonglow
Waterleaf
Shiverthorn
Deathweed
Fireblossom

The best time to pick these plants, are when they are in full bloom, of which then they will drop seeds for you to further cultivate them. The best things to plant these plants are either in clay pots, or planter boxes. If you want to start early, use Clay pots. for a bit easier organization, use planter boxes, which will be sold by the Dryad after beating pre-hardmode bosses. Using the boxes or pots will make it to where the plants will not be broken from indirect swings or shots, only being able to be picked when you use a pick or Staff of Regrowth. To use the plants for potions, you need a bottle placed on any surface relatively like platforms. To make a bottle, you need 1 glass, which will make 2 bottles each. Glass, if you didn't know, costs 2 sand of any kind at the furnace. With these bottles, be sure to fill them up with water, by taking them and opening your craft menu while standing in a bit of water. With all this info said, let's get started!
Starting Fresh
So, made a new world, ready for adventure, but wanting the reassurance of potions? Start things off by picking Dayblooms in the vacinity! Obviously, make sure it's day time, otherwise, you won't get seeds from it. Not only that, Starting fresh, and running around at night isn't necessarily the wisest thing to do in the first place, now is it not?

After picking the Dayblooms, store them, and the seeds away, unless you have Clay for making Clay Pots. If you do, plant the seeds in, and, when it's day, and the flowers are blooming, just use your pickaxe and take the flower and the extra seeds hopefully dropped from it.

As you go around, looking for surface chests, they will occasionally have herb bags. Open them, and save all the seeds and/or plants in a chest. I recommend that you do not plant anything else in the clay pots other than daybloom early on, because it'll easily get confusing to new players. Feel free to do it, otherwise, though.

Along with those herb bags, can be bottles. For the majority of your potions, you want these bottles filled with water. However, when you do get these bottles, be sure to leave one empty. You want to hold onto that for early potion-making access.

As you get situated, and go underground, you'll most likely find Blinkroot growing in ordinary dirt, without any grass. For these to have seeds, you want the tips of these plants to be yellow. Blinkroot is rather easy to spot when the area around it is dark, for that it leaves a very faint blinking light, where it is, around how the name implies.
Picking More Plants
After getting your first plants, you'll be inclined to explore the areas out of your spawn area. From the desert, to the snow, will be more plants! In the desert, there will be Waterleaf. These plants are a bit picky with their blooms, because the time I know them to be blooming is during the rain. Be careful, though, since the new updates of 1.3.3, Sandstorms can and will happen, so be on gaurd when walking through the sands.

Heading into the snow biome, is not only my favorite wood, Boreal, but Shiverthorn! This plant blooms with a large, light blue flower at the top. Honestly, this plant is much more easier to pick at bloom, because you tend to find it blooming as you're walking in the snow. In 1.3.3, there are now blizzards, which, in reality is just a visual effect, but can blind you of seeing some Shiverthorn growing about.

After getting your grounds and taking on stronger foes, you'll find yourself in the corruption/crimson, where Deathweed grows. At bloom, these plants will have red leaves at the end of their stalks. Sadly, Deathweed only blooms either on blood moons, or full moons. Both of these times, are rather annoying to deal with. I honestly hope you get lucky with Herb Bags early on, to get the seeds. If you can handle a blood moon in these biomes, be my guest and grab some Deathweed. Other than that, unless you have a sextant from the Angler, it's probably best to not bother waiting for a full moon.

Heading into the Jungle, is Moonglow! It blooms at night, with a bell-like blue flower. By the time you're going through the jungle, you're likely to find loads of it growing under and above ground. However, as you're at the jungle, be sure to look for some Living Rich Mahogany Trees (Aka, the giant trees in the underground Jungle), Or the small structures with green torches. In these, there will be chests, that can hold a Staff Of Regrowth, which will really help increase your farming productivity rates!

Finally, diving deep to the depths of the Underworld, you'll find Fireblossom, growing on the Ash, around. Hopefully, by the time you get down here, you have a Gold/Platinum Watch. They can help you determine when to grab these plants at their bloom. Their blooms are a big, ball of fire. They bloom near the end of the day, before nightfall. So, hopefully, you can pick a good time to grab them.

Of course, as you're going through these places, you're also defeating a lot of the bosses. Once you have the dryad, I suggest you ditch those clay pots and move on to Planter Boxes, mainly because of the organization and ability to use the boxes as platforms, rather than having solid ground for pots.
The Plant Plot and It's Tools
So, as you're going around the world, be sure to stop by the dungeon and grab an Alchemy Table. With the 33% chance of not consuming potion materials, you'll be glad to have it with your farm to increase potion productivity, to go with that plant productivity from the Staff of Regrowth, that you got from the jungle. As you set up your farm and alchemic area, be sure to have chests to store your plants, your seeds, and your other potion materials other than the plants ( Examples: Bottled Water, Fish, other materials ). Always have The Guide NPC and at least 1 bottled water handy, to check the mass of buff potions that all require the bottled water.

For the planter boxes, I suggest at least 30 boxes per plant. For a simple way to make the farm, making it easy to reach and plant/pick each one, I suggest stacking the planter boxes over each other, leaving at least 1 block between them going upwards to have room for them to grow the plants.

As you go on and build this, make it look pretty! You'll like this idea, for that farming here will make it rather peaceful and calming to work with. (I suggest you make a peace candle, too, if you don't want too many baddies bothering you. Just 2 gold, and a pink torch, made from Pinky's gel!)

With this said and done, hopefully you got things set up!
Possible Plant Panics
If you're ever having issues with plant productivity, or just need more seeds/plants, go to previous references to regain the seeds.

Deathweed is easily the worst issue towards getting extra seeds. Hopefully, by the time you started growing them, you have the Staff of regrowth to go along and gain extras from it. Since more than likely you will have issues with growing this plant, you should take the time out of a blood moon, and go to your evil land. I've noticed that Deathweed grows much more often on the evil land's stone rather than the grass, you should try taking a dive to underground levels of your evil. Not only you'll get the seeds during the blood moon, but, the Underground makes it a bit easier to prevent getting swarmed from all angles, as well as seemingly tone down the spawn rate of monsters. Be sure to grab as much as you can, paying attention to the time, because with it, you'll be able to get a good seed count to cultivate your farm to health.

Prior to 1.3.3, Sandstorms can be a major issues, with the new enemies, and the visuals that block your eyesight. Waterleaf can be an issue, even when raining, since sandstorms can occur during rain as well. Be sure to watch out for all enemies and do a quick Grab n' go with the waterleaf and seeds. At least keep 2 slots open for grabbing plants, so that you can get the seeds and plant. Hopefully then, you can get in and out of the desert without getting destroyed.

Fireblossom can be extra tedious, if you don't have the right gear getting it. At most, if you didn't bring a gold/platinum pocket watch, you can build a good spot around where the small fireblossom is growing, and try to wait out until it blooms. I suggest making a large box, boxing only you in, and the plant out, so that you can freely swing your weapons to deflect the Imp's Fireballs, and beat the Bone Serpents.

Alchemy Tables spawn randomly in the dungeon, so, on your visits early on, be sure to go all out and look for one. If anything, make a small house and bed at the entrance of the dungeon so that you don't have to walk back from spawn.

Staff of Regrowth is a bit tedious, since you don't necessarily know if the chests ahead contain it or not. Bring a spelunker potion, if you got one, and take a full on search for the giant trees. Since the jungle is dangerous practically throughout the majority of the game, try to play it safe with the plants n' bees. Take safe routes, box yourself in when low health, do whatever. Just try to find that staff, and anything else you need, and just book it!
Planter Box Times
So, the dryad sells these Planter Boxes, as you kill the bosses, right? Well, if you really need to know what you'll be planting next, here's the bosses and their planter box reward!

King Slime: Daybloom Box

Eye of Cthulhu: Blinkroot Box

Eater of Worlds/Brain of Cthulhu: Deathweed Box

Queen Bee: Moonglow Box

Skeletron: Waterleaf and Shiverthorn Box

Wall Of Flesh: Fireblossom Box

Also, as you are planting, you can plant other seeds in other boxes. However, I suggest you keep them to their proper boxes, just incase if you, or anyone else gets confused.

Hopefully, this will help you, for future reference~
Summary!
With this guide, hopefully, you have made a decent farm, and a decent source of plants to get your potion party started and going~!

If you need further help, or just need someone to talk to, Just ask! I'm gladly open to give pointers or give a good chat to put forth this farm fantasy!

as for the deathweed thing, the staff of regrowth can harvest any plant and yield seeds even if they're not blooming. However, you can't do this if the plants are in a clay pot or planter box.
