K 19

The K 19 "hiroshima" was the first soviet submarine to be powered by a nuclear powerplant, when during her first test at sea she suffered a leak in the reactor coolent and the crew had to fix it, it too all the engineers to do it and the engineers were exposed to high levels of radiation within 10 mins, the most exposed engineer was Boris Korchilov Lieutenant who got a 5400 rem rating, the leak was eventualy fixed and the sub called for help by a diesle powered soviet sub near by but the american destroyer heard the signal too and offered help, the K-19 Captain Yuriy Povstyev denied the request, they were towed by the soviet sub back to moscow, the crew on boured who suffered the most radiation names were:Boris Korchilov, Boris Ryzhikov, Yuriy Ordochkin, Evgeny Kashenkov, Semyon Penkov, Nicolai Savkin, Valery Charitonov and Yuriy Povstyev
