About the New Game+ mode
New Game+ lets you begin a brand new game with most, but not all, of Adam Jensen's character progress that was gained during your first playthrough. For example, all of your augmentation choices will carry over into New Game+ so you can use them right away. This can be extremely fun because you can tackle challenges early in the game and in ways that were likely unavailable to you at that exact spot in your first playthrough.

Your New Game+ game is always based on your most recent playthrough of New Game (regular). This means you cannot "offer up" a choosable saved game for what you want your New Game+ adventure to be based on. In addition, this means if you've started or completed a New Game+ and choose to begin another New Game+, it will still be based on your most recent playthrough of New Game (regular). See the dedicated section in this guide for complete details.

When you begin a New Game+, you are able to choose your game difficulty just like always. However, the "I Never Asked For This" unlocked difficulty is not selectable. It will also still not be selectable if you finish that difficulty on a regular New Game playthrough.

Remember, New Game+ is unlocked only after you complete the game's story on any difficulty.

How to identify New Game+ game saves
You can identify your New Game+ games saves from the standard Load Game menu. While browsing, you can see the extra words "New Game+" in the game save details. This is shown consistently in any type of New Game+ save: Latest Auto-Save, Previous Auto-Save, Quick-Save, Save (manual saves).

How to change which save is used for New Game+
Unfortunately, there is no easy way to re-choose which saved game shall affect your New Game+. It will always be based on your most recent playthrough of New Game (regular). However, every time you finish another New Game (regular) playthrough, you are given the opportunity to base all fresh New Game+ games off your just-finished playthrough or not.

This ultimately means that playing New Game (regular) again is how you change your New Game+. You do not need to start a fresh game to influence your New Game+ unless you want to; in fact, you can safely load an older save that's 1/4th, half, or 3/4ths complete and just finish that.

  • To re-make New Game+ with information from your just-finished New Game (regular) playthrough, select Yes when you see the choice at the end of the story mode.
  • To avoid overwriting your existing New Game+ with information from your just-finished new Game (regular) playthrough, select No when you see the choice at the end of the story mode.

You are given a warning and choice when finishing a New Game (regular) playthrough after New Game+ is already unlocked.

It's important to note that neither of those choices will harm your existing saved games, regardless if you have additional New Game (regular) or New Game+'s currently in progress. This choice only affects starting any brand new New Game+. If you are unsure what to decide, try saving before the final boss fight in every playthrough and always keep those as your "safe game saves". You can then use any of those to replace New Game+ information simply by beating the final boss.

I stacked my HR NG+s and it was fun for a while, then starting the game the umpteenth time with all augs unlocked wasn't as fun as it usually was. I wish they had the option to do that though, just need some self-restraint on my part.

It's a bit of a shame that you can't stack NG+'s

Unless increasing the difficulty wiped my storage back to default, NG+ did NOT carry over any items that I stored in any of the three apartment storage containers.

@Surtsey, got two more questions, if you don't mind:

- Are the two new augs from the Season Pass permanently available for every playthrough or also limited?

- Do you have any knowledge about how our decisions in the game will be carried over to the upcoming sequel? I have read on Reddit that only the saves from regular new games are taken into account, not NG+.

@Surtsey, thank you very much for your time, it is really appreciated.

I actually don't care much about the items, since with my playstyle I barely use any weapons and active augs. But I think this design decision from SE is needlessly creating confusion.

Anyway, as soon as I find the time, I will make a fast run through a INAFS new game and see if I get a corresponding NG+. Also, if the secret stash in the apartment is really not carrying the items over.

@Calvo, thank you for the kind words; you're very welcome! My goal for the guide is to help players both prepare for and begin a New Game+ without unwanted surprises.

Unlike most items, I have not personally determined if the "I Never Asked For This" difficulty is or is not selectable in New Game+ after finishing that difficulty on New Game (regular). Even though your logic is correct (it is!), I've been told by some players that "INATF" difficulty is not a choice in New Game+ even if a New game (regular) has been completed.

Until I can test it myself, I have zero confidence in my answer to your question. But I am letting you know what some players are saying. That is what they're saying.

@Calvo As for what are the "best" playthrough(s) to finally use consumable DLC items, this one is subjective for each individual player, but I can offer some clear guidance:

1. I recommend redeeming and using Praxis kits in New Game (regular).

Although the consumable itself is bound to that playthrough, its effect should not be. There is nothing that will remove an augmentation point that's waiting to be applied or has been applied. So if you use these in New Game (regular), at least you can enjoy their benefit a second time in a subsequent New Game+. Even though it would be tied to that New Game+, at least you got two uses out of it (but only consumed it one time). Conversely, using a Praxis kit in New Game+

2. Try to avoid redeeming consumable DLC items in "I Never Asked For This" difficulty.

Simply said, you're going to frustrate yourself if you're redeeming consumable items in an already temporary playthrough. All it takes is one game crash for that playthrough and your items to be gone for good, not to mention you could always fall to your death from a balcony that's too high ;)
Surtsey  [author] Sep 7, 2016 @ 6:54pm
3. Nobody can take away what you've already used.

Take advantage of that fact. For example, if you redeem credits or ammunition from DLC packs, simply make sure you use them. What you spend your credits on will transfer to New Game+...just not the credits themselves. And if you already have a surplus of ammunition and your don't find yourself using much anyways, I would avoid redeeming any. My advice is to redeem ammo only when you're sure it will get used; that's up to you to decide when is best! Saving it for timely moments where you have none of a certain type sounds good, though.

@Surtsey, thank you very much for this great overview. I still find the issues with the DLC items irritating though. And just to make sure I didn't miss anything:

I finished the regular game on "Give me Deus Ex" (GMDX) and started a NG+ on the same difficulty. But since I want a NG+ on "I never asked for this" (INAFT), I have to start a new regular game again on that difficulty setting and in the end it will unlock a NG+ at INAFT, right?

Since redeemed consumables aren't transfered between the NG and NG+ saves, it would make the most sense to save those for my final NG+ playthrough, no?
